Book Blast Update

Book Blast is seeing tens of thousands of visitors going to both the traditionally and independently published book pages. In just the initial two weeks, over 20,000 page views and over 900 clicks on the "Buy The Book" button prove that readers are thoroughly engaged with Book Blast.

You can still join in if you'd like to purchase a page at $25USD for your book that has been or will be published in calendar year 2016. Book Blast runs through Friday, November 18.

We are also running incentive contests each week that reward all participants and viewers of Book Blast. We've awarded gift cards with matching donations to We Need Diverse Books, autographed books, and this week we'll award e-readers.

If you have a Book Blast page, keep promoting it on all social media platforms to drive traffic to the site. You'll benefit and so will all your SCBWI colleagues. Don't miss out on the fun and excitement of browsing, buying and enjoying new books via Book Blast!

Winter Reading List

The PAL Winter Reading List is in the works and we look to have as robust and diverse an array of books as we had on the Summer list.

Over 1,100 entries from more than 300 publishers, this looks to be a list that will deliver books that entertain and educate to librarians, bookstore owners, teachers and parents.

It will be available for download on the website starting November 15. Exciting plans are in the works to feature the PAL Reading Lists at ALA and other large-scale conventions. Stay tuned!

SCBWI Exclusive with...
Alexandra Arnold, Editor , HarperCollins

Alex Arnold is an editor at Katherine Tegen Books, acquiring middle grade and YA. She works with authors like Corey Ann Haydu, Kali Wallace, Brittany Cavallaro, Terra Elan McVoy, and Michelle Andreani and Mindi Scott. She is always on the lookout for diverse, authentic voices, characters that could step off the page, and atmospheric settings that make her feel transported. She would especially love to find a YA with a unique structure or narrative device (think  The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak or T he Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan); a feminist fairy tale or fable retelling in MG or YA; and both contemporary and historical fiction featuring diverse and underrepresented perspectives. Particular interests and soft spots include baseball, dogs, dark family magic, wry humor, and strong female friendship. You can find her on Twitter (@alexyarnold), and she keeps her wish list updated on Tumblr.

What was your path to editing?
Well, it all started when I fell in love with reading, of course! I was a voracious reader from age five, and my mom writes children's books, too---she's a former SCBWI RA, in fact! I interned at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for a summer during college, and knew then that I'd pursue a job in editorial after I graduated. I spent a year as an editorial assistant on the adult side of the industry, but happily returned to kidlit when I got the job at Katherine Tegen Books. And I've been here ever since!

On the Shelves

Malaprop's Bookstore

In the wake of canceled author appearances in protest against North Carolina's swiftly passed bill barring transgender people from bathrooms and locker rooms that do not match the gender on their birth certificates, Malaprop's Bookstore in Ashville, North Carolina, has continued to thrive as a beacon of the community. Owner Linda-Marie Barrett shares what's on the shelves.

What sets Malaprop's apart from other bookstores?
Malaprop's offers a unique combination of outstanding customer service and  book selection. We bring in titles you won't find in many other stores, because we'll take risks in support of important literature. We carry many debut authors, books on controversial themes, and works in translation.  We also have an amazing, nationally-recognized author event program. We've worked hard to cultivate an audience for YA and MG author events, hosting panels featuring veteran and debut authors to appeal to a wider group of readers. We love bringing authors to schools, too. If children can't get to our bookstore, we'll make sure we can bring authors and their works to them.

The October prompt was:  As we enter the fall season, we reflect on the many meanings of the word fall. For this month's prompt, provide a dramatic description of a fall---physical, emotional or spiritual. 125 words or less.

Winner: Carolyn Combs

I hop hop hop up to the opening and perch on the edge.  "OoEEK," mother calls, "ooEEK, ooEEK."  I launch my one-day-old self from the nest cavity into the air.  Webbed feet and stubby wings spread-eagled, I plummet past the leaves of oaks, maples, hickories, plummet past the chirps of chickadees, finches, robins, plummet past the territories of squirrels, chipmunks, mice, plummet past a sleeping raccoon.  Poof!  I bounce in the leaf litter, righting myself before wood-duck waddling after my mother.

"OoEEK," I reply as we slide into the swamp.  Home.

Winner: Sage McCann

There is a place where giants dwell, where secrets cannot hide. In the beginning they were everywhere, watching over creation. With broad limbs and deep roots, they testified in silence, keeping careful record of what had passed. They bore witness to the rise of man, and they watched his lust for dominance grow. For every year they took account, a ring was forged in their trunks, not in judgment but in remembrance of what took place. Yet man, desperate to erase the evidence of his sinful heart, felled the giants as he did his brothers. The few that remained banded together, sheltered between the mountains and the sea. All that took place is here, written in the trees, if only it wanted to be known.
