There is a lot of activity at Uncle Hunk's Junk Park this week! We're feeling and looking a lot like a construction zone with skid steers and cement trucks and power washers and hard working men scattered about the property. And it should feel like a construction zone because for the past 18 months the Elkhorn Chamber, City of Elkhorn and our fabulous building owner, Sue Wallem, have been actively pursuing dreams of building a new park in downtown Elkhorn.
While the Uncle Hunk's Junk Park may not be a jungle gym-and-slide kind of park, it will be fully equipped with walking paths, swinging benches and a beautiful one of a kind arbor with lots of outdoor space to be enjoyed every single day. I plan to eat many Subway subs and salads in the park as soon as the new outdoor furniture is delivered! You should absolutely plan to join me anytime and schedule your lunchbreaks in the park too!
Sue Wallem has a community-minded vision regarding the park as a tribute to her late husband, Gary Wallem, who loved the City of Elkhorn. It has been the efforts of the Wallem Crew, several subcontractors and our very community who are working diligently to bring this park to fruition. The Elkhorn Chamber has been fortunate to receive multiple grants that have helped offset a portion of expenses related to the new park. Also, the project has several community organizations who stepped up to offer dollars and services including Elkhorn Rotary, Elkhorn Lions Club and Sugar Creek Lutheran Church!
