Winter Olympics Fun in Physical Education Classes!

The P.E classes have been competing in their own SL Winter Olympics. The classes are each a country and are competing against the other countries in their grade level. We kicked off the Olympics by having a torch run. The students learned about all the symbols of the Olympic Games (rings, etc). The events we are competing in include the following: curling, speed skating, biathlon, bobsled, hockey, luge, skeleton, and ski jump.

We had 2 special guests visit and share their Olympic experiences.

Tricia Luoma
Tricia Luoma competed in 3 Winter Olympics winning gold, silver and bronze medals for the USA Women’s Hockey Team. She shared her story and showed her medals to 3rd grade students. Her daughter, Riayn, is in Ms. Hill’s 3rd grade class.

Joe Joyce
Joe Joyce is the grandpa of 4th grade student, Abbey Milton in Ms. Cowan’s class. He ran with the Olympic Torch for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He shared how he ran for 1 Kilometer by Minnehaha Falls. He was chosen to be a torch runner because he started a run club when he worked for Best Buy.

A Big THANK YOU to our Early Childhood Colleagues!

Dear Susan Lindgren Colleagues and Friends,

We are so sorry for the pain and sadness you are experiencing as you process the loss of Kim. Valentine's Day was one of Kim's favorite holidays. In an effort to honor her and to do something special to show our love and support to you, we've set up a Valentine's Day breakfast in the staff lunch room. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly challenging time.

With love,

Your Early Learning Colleagues

SLP District Video: Celebrating Black History Month and NAAPID
St. Louis Park Public Schools premiered a video on Monday, February 14, in recognition of Black History Month and National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID). The video highlights how ancestral knowledge energizes and enhances the spirit of our students, staff and families.

NAAPID launched in 1995 after Evansville, Indiana native Joseph Dulin was inspired by the Million Man March. Dulin, who became a celebrated educator and activist before his 2014 death, returned from the March intent on focusing parents and guardians on the goals of NAAPID, which include:

  • Parent (guardian/family) involvement in your child's education.
  • Addressing serious challenges facing African American students.
  • Promoting and providing strategies for all parents (guardians and families) and students to take full advantage of the educational process at all levels of the educational system (preschool through college).
  • Identifying and developing partnership efforts between all sectors of the community (business, school, home etc.)
  • Establishing an annual event on the second Monday in February to provide continued focus on these goals across the country.
PTO News
Save the New Date! Next PTO Meeting, Wednesday, March 9, 2022, 7:00-8:15 p.m., over Zoom

Don’t miss our next PTO meeting where we will welcome St. Louis Park Mayor Jake Spano who will discuss the history of racial covenants (discriminatory restrictions) embedded in house deeds in St. Louis Park. He will also talk about the city’s partnership with Just Deeds, [link to: https://justdeeds.org] an organization working to remove racist language from home titles. Did you know many houses near our school have these covenants? This means that historically no one other than a white person could purchase that property.

You can look up your home’s address here [link to: https://justdeeds.org/homeowners-buyers-and-sellers/] to see if you have a racial covenant in your home’s deed. Come learn about this important issue, how it affects generational wealth, and what you can do about it. As always, we will share PTO news, get school updates from Principal Pollock, and have a chance for parents to ask questions. A Zoom link will be shared closer to meeting date.
We need your help with our Bridges Math Curriculum!

Can you help?

We are collecting toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes for use with our new math curriculum, Bridges.

Please bring to the main office any paper tubes you may have at home.

Thank you!

COVID Tests Available for Students and Staff
Additional rapid-result COVID antigen tests have been ordered and are now available at sites. Tests can be requested at the front office of a student’s school or staff’s primary work location. The newest test that has become available is the BD Veritor nasal swab test. One test kit (containing two tests) may be requested at a time. BD Veritor tests are app enabled and require a smartphone and internet connection. An alternative test option will be supplied to families that do not have access to a smartphone and internet connection.

Students that are not enrolled in St. Louis Park Public schools such as siblings, relatives, children of staff, will need to request a test from their school/school district or leverage other testing resources. Relatives of staff will also need to leverage local testing resources. More information on community testing options are listed below. Please contact Flower Krutina, krutina.flower@slpschools.org, with questions.

What is the BD Veritor antigen rapid test?
The BD Veritor nasal swab at-home test is a rapid antigen test that can be used by anyone over the age of two. Each kit includes two tests per box. In order to take the test, you are required to download the Scanwell Health App on an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel smartphone. The app will guide you through the testing process and will take about 20 minutes to complete.

Cold Weather ~ Outdoor Clothing Reminder
Please remember students go outside for recess every day! Make sure they have outdoor clothing. Label all clothing.

Students will always go outside unless the regular temperature is below 0 degrees or the windchill temperature is -10 degrees or below. We will watch the temperature to keep our students safe.

We are always in need of gently used or new winter gear, especially waterproof mittens/gloves.

If you are in need of winter gear, please contact our Social Worker Michelle Bryant at bryant.michelle@slpschools.org
