Remembering Trustee John Willis
|
On February 28, 2022, our dear friend, Trustee John Willis, passed away. John was first elected as Village Trustee in 2001. During his 20 years of service as Trustee, John was instrumental in making new programs for the Village, including employing curbside electronic disposal, making Inverness one of the first communities in the area. In 2008, John supported the issuance of a $9.5 million bond to provide system-wide improvement to the Village’s 46-mile local street network.
As a born salesman and career representing manufacturers, John assisted in “selling” the importance of the Village creating its own Police Department. Through his hard work, Inverness has a top-notch community-first police department, which has resulted in an estimated savings of over $10 million.
John was a beloved husband to Nancy for over 45 years and father to John Matthews, Nancy, and Carrie, along with many grandchildren.

Inverness First Responders Conduct Tabletop Exercise
|
|
On March 15, 2022, the Village of Inverness tested capabilities to manage and respond to simulated weather emergency incidents. The tabletop exercise involved Village of Inverness staff, Inverness Police Department, and the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District. The Joint Emergency Management System coordinated the training exercise.
The emergency simulated a tornado moving along a line that ran east to west through the Village. The scenario included multiple damaged residences, utility outages, and numerous non-life-threatening injuries. The tabletop exercise was designed to test the Village Emergency Operation Plan, Incident Command System, Traffic and Access Control, Communication, Personnel Safety, and Emergency Management Services.
Mayor Jack Tatooles stated, “Our regularly scheduled emergency operation training exercise is an excellent method to continue developing our skills during a natural disaster. This is an opportunity to test our emergency plans, infrastructure, and our first responders to find areas for further improvements.”

Home Security Systems Best Practices
|
|
During the past several years, there has been an increase in DIY home security systems installed in homes. These new home security systems provide operational monitoring services from professionals via a central station, monitor-it-yourself, or a hybrid system.
Regardless of the type of system that is installed, the Inverness Police Department recommends the following best practices:
- Call Inverness’ 911 Dispatch Center for all emergency activated alerts
- When a home security system alarm is activated, your professional monitoring or the individual monitoring remotely should FIRST call Northwest Central Dispatch System at 847-590-3478.
- If you monitor your security system yourself, add NWCDS number 847-590-3478 to your contact list to call dispatch directly.
- Utilize your Home Security System. When you leave your home or turn in for the evening, active your Home Security System. Even for short walks, the walk may turn into a long conversation with a friend on the opposite side of the neighborhood. A system not on is worthless.
- Do not “call-off” the police department. Do not request that the police department not respond unless you are confident that you or a family member triggered the false alarm. The Inverness Police Department is here to protect our community. An Officer responding to a false alarm is better than discovering an after-the-fact crime occurred.
- Train New Users. Be sure everyone who uses the alarm system knows how to activate the system correctly and how to disarm the system in an accidental alarm activations.
- Regularly Test the Home Security System. At least annually, verity your emergency contact information with monitoring service and verity sensors are working correctly (check batteries, dust dirt, and cobwebs from motion detectors, etc.)
- Make your house look like someone is always home. Keep porch lights on at night and utilize timers for light inside the home.
- If you see something, say something. Whether you are on your way to work, walking in your neighborhood, or out and about in your community, remember: We all play a role in keeping our communities safe. Remember to stay vigilant and say something when you see signs of suspicious activity.
