Dear SRS Parents and Guardians,
Our prayers go out to the parents and the community of The Covenant School, Nashville, Tennessee. In Connecticut, unfortunately, we know all too well the horror of these events and hold that community, as well as our own, close in prayer and love. As the SRS principal and a mother, I share the anxiety you are feeling and hope the information below will help answer some of your concerns.
As you know, the safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority, and I am grateful for our ongoing partnership with our community, staff, and local authorities. Over the past few months our entire faculty received over 7 hours of in-person safety training from a trained safety expert. In addition, 5 members of our school staff attended two additional days of safety training offered by the Center for School Safety and Crisis Preparation at WCSU. St. Rita School has a Crisis Management plan that has been reviewed by the staff. The school safety plan has also been examined with input from outside safety consultants.
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, St. Rita School has been awarded a $50,000 safety grant from the State of Connecticut Department of Homeland Security, and earlier this week we were notified that the funding is now available. We are currently applying for an additional grant of up to $100,000 so we can continue to enhance the security measures at our school. The monies we have been awarded will go toward replacing exterior doors. Additional funding will go toward purchasing additional security cameras and updating our security system. The completion of these projects is a top priority.
Both Mrs. Barnett and Mr. Halloran do an outstanding job screening and documenting all visitors into our building. We appreciate your understanding in following the safety protocols and practices we have in place to help safeguard your child/ren.
As you talk to your student at home about these tragedies, please ensure they know the importance of kindness and compassion towards others and stress that they always have a caring adult at school to talk with. As always, I appreciate your continued support in keeping our school community safe. Please feel free to reach out to me should you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you for entrusting your child/ren to our care. May God bless you, your family, and our St. Rita School community.
God Bless,
Mrs. Tiezzi
