Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends and Members of the Ark and Dove Community,

Because of an all day rain forecast for tomorrow, we have decided to postpone Spring Flower Planting to Saturday May 21, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM.

A story I used once in a sermon ( Ok maybe twice):

A man had not attended church for months and months. His Pastor gave him a phone call and asked if she could come over some evening so they could talk. They worked out a date and the pastor sat with the congregant and they chatted for over an hour in front of a beautiful fire in the living room. Kids and spouse were in and out. They covered a wide range of topics and about in the middle of the conversation, the pastor reached into the fire with some tongs and pulled out a hunk of glowing wood. She set it on the bricks of the outer hearth, away from the fire, and as they talked the glow dimmed and the hunk of wood became ashen gray. Towards the end of the conversation the man picked up the now cold piece of wood and placed it back in the fire. Looking at the flames, he said to her, “You know pastor, I’ve been missing worship. I look forward to seeing you in church this Sunday.” They finished their conversation. The minister prayed, shook hands with the family and drove home.

Anxiety is a terrible enemy. I completely understand that. Hybrid worship has proven to be a wonderful gift.

Convenience too, can be costly.

Peace of Christ,

 Tim
Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

Last night, I was pleased to join five other members of Ark and Dove in a meeting of three broad-based community power organizations. This was a meeting of faithful people from Howard County (PATH, People Acting Together in Howard), Montgomery County (AIM, Action in Montgomery), and Anne Arundel County (ACT, Anne Arundel Connecting Together). We gathered to prepare for actions wherein we will let the top candidates for Governor, Comptroller, and Attorney General know what we want for Maryland and ask them to work with us in attaining what we want.

Through relational meetings and listening sessions, we have outlined some collective dreams for our state: universal and high quality childcare and preK, equitable education, affordable safe and decent housing, quality and accessible transportation, and climate justice. There is, of course, more that we want for the present and future citizens of Maryland and that is why Pastor Tim and I, along with the ACT Core Team of Ark and Dove (Cheryl Walcutt, Shirley Fuller, and Jen Roman) want to hear from you as we prepare for June 12 and 23 when we will have the opportunity to meet candidates. Ark and Dove is the host on June 23rd. On May 19th, ACT, AIM, and PATH meet again to prepare. Please consider joining us.

Given the fragile state of our democracy, elected officials (local and state) need to hear what people of faith hope for in their communities. They need to know what the faithful actually desire. Churches and other faith organizations have the right and responsibility to proclaim in the public sphere their hunger for justice--whether racial, economic, identity, reproductive, or climate. Here is our tangible chance.

Peace,

Jon
Verse and Prayer

Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

-Hebrews 4:16
Blessing When the World Is Ending

Look, the world is always ending somewhere.

Somewhere the sun has come crashing down. Somewhere it has gone completely dark.

Somewhere it has ended with the gun, the knife, the fist. Somewhere it has ended with the slammed door, the shattered hope.

Somewhere it has ended with the utter quiet that follows the news from the phone, the television, the hospital room.

Somewhere it has ended with a tenderness that will break your heart.

But, listen, this blessing means to be anything but morose. It has not come to cause despair.

It is simply here because there is nothing a blessing is better suited for than an ending, nothing that cries out more for a blessing than when a world is falling apart.

This blessing will not fix you, will not mend you, will not give you false comfort; it will not talk to you about one door opening when another one closes.

It will simply sit itself beside you among the shards and gently turn your face toward the direction from which the light will come, gathering itself about you as the world begins again.

Amen

-Jan Richardson
This Sunday at both 9:00 and 10:30, we will present an arrangement of "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" for this Good Shepherd Sunday. This beautiful, two-part choir piece, is written for equal voices and in a canon (where the voices sing the same melody, but at different times). The voices sing the hymn setting of the St. Columba tune, while the piano accompaniment is cleverly set to J.S. Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C Major from The Well-Tempered Clavier.

Next week, on May 15th, we will present "African Psalm", which is a lively call and response of a traditional Zambian folk song. It will surely leave people singing "Lift your voices to God, all ye people! Praise the Lord singing alleluia!" throughout the week.

Wishing you all a healthy and wonderful weekend.

Warmly,

Rebecca
