Spring Break | Office Notes
Families to COVID Test Prior to Return to BHS
Some office notes as Spring Break approaches, from April 11-15. The Main Office will be open on Tuesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 14 from 8 a.m. to noon. The Counseling Office is closed all week.

On Wednesday, April 6, BHS will be sending home COVID Rapid Antigen tests (two per student). We know some families will be traveling during Spring Break and in order to prevent the spread of COVID we are asking students and staff to test within 24 hours prior to returning to school on April 18. While we are asking anyone who is sick or tests positive to stay home, we are not requiring people to report their test results.

Visitors
One-time/one-day visitors and volunteers are allowed in buildings during the school day with the following requirements:

  • Visitors must sign in at the Main Office and show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours.
  • Home tests will be accepted.
  • Same-day rapid antigen tests are highly recommended.

Parking
Students may not park on the school premises. The front Parking Lot off NW 65th Street is for administration and visitors (two-hour limit) only. The Staff Parking Lot, on the north end of campus, is for staff and Ballard Pool visitors only.

Main Office Contacts
Have a quick question for the office staff? You can still reach Administrative Secretary Cindy Peterson at crpeterson@seattleschools.org; or Athletic Secretary Bethany Nielcen at blnielcen@seattleschools.org. Phone: 206-252-1000. Updates are also available on the School Bulletin.

SPS COVID-19 Update
Spring Break is coming, and Seattle Public Schools is working hard to ensure the health and safety of our students, staff, and communities.

We are optimistic about COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations dropping in our communities and encouraged by recent announcements by health officials easing COVID-19 requirements.

We realize the pandemic is not over and we know that surges and new variants are possible. That is why we want you to know that SPS is prepared and ready to respond to a surge in our schools if/when necessary.

SPS is preparing by:

Sending iHealth home rapid antigen tests home with every student and staff member before Spring Break, to be taken within 24 hours of returning to school on April 18
Encouraging families to opt-in to in-school on-demand testing so that we may quickly respond to increases in cases in classrooms, schools, or communities (more details coming soon)
Maintaining a supply of high-quality masks and rapid COVID tests to send to schools if needed. As there is greater access to home tests, SPS recently closed its regional testing sites due to limited use. SPS is ready to redeploy support again if needed.
Continuing important COVID safety measures in our schools like staying home when sick, testing, and strong air flow
Having a plan for when to re-instate COVID safety measures like masking when rates increase

Families may prepare by:
Talking with your child about when we may need to wear masks again and keeping a supply of high-quality masks on hand. You may get free masks at local drugstores.
Keeping a supply of home COVID tests on hand. You may get free home tests from the State of Washington. Your school may also provide home COVID tests.
Vaccinating yourself and your family – see vaccine clinics happening this weekend

What is Social Emotional Learning?
SEL is the lifelong process of learning how to:
  • Develop a health identity
  • Manage emotions
  • Achieve goals
  • Have supportive relationships
  • Make responsible decisions

SEL starts at home with families and continues at school where students learn about emotions, show empathy for others, and contribute to the community.

Why focus on SEL at school? When students feel connected to their teachers, peers, and school, the learning networks in their brain become stronger. Children’s social emotional development is best supported when parents and families, schools, and community partners all work together.

16 million gallons of fuel are wasted by unnecessary idling in the U.S. every day
Sustainable Ballard has “idle free” cards and posters to get the word out to neighbors and others. [MORE INFO] or email BHS parent Polly Freeman to help. Remember -- idling gets you nowhere!
