Mountain Family Celebrates Expanded Access to Affordable Care in Eagle County Despite Interruption from Mother Nature
Ross Brooks, CEO & patient

While Mother Nature has now twice delayed our planned public grand opening of a new Community Health Center in Avon, Colorado, I’m writing to celebrate the opening of the MFHC Avon site, which began serving patients last month on January 16, 2023.

Mountain Family’s Avon Integrated Health Center provides affordable primary medical, dental, behavioral, and pharmacy services to the Eagle River Valley community. In the first six weeks of operation, the MFHC Avon team has cared for more than 650 patients. We aim to serve up to 4,000 patients in the coming year ahead. To make an appointment at Mountain Family, please call 970-945-2840.

We’re thankful to many local, state, and national community partners for helping to support the launch of a new Community Health Center in Avon. U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, Colorado State Speaker of the House Rep. Julie McCluskie, and Colorado State Senator Dylan Roberts congratulated the MFHC team with messages you can view in this newsletter and on our YouTube channel.

In addition to strong legislative support, we’re deeply grateful to our community partners from Vail Health, Eagle County, the Colorado Health Foundation, Rocky Mountain Health Plans, the U.S. Bureau of Primary Health Care, Town of Avon, Office Outfitters and Planners, Rob Pew and Susan Taylor, Steelcase Furniture, and countless others for your support of Mountain Family Health Centers.

We’ll gather for a community celebration later this coming Summer when the snow has melted into the rivers and our beautiful mountain communities are reliably safe for travel.

CEO Brooks to Step Down End of Summer 2023;
Mountain Family Board to Begin National CEO Search
After 21 years of serving in the Community Health Center movement, the past 11 at Mountain Family Health Centers, MFHC CEO Ross Brooks informed the Board of Directors and staff of his intent to resign from the CEO position as of August 31, 2023.

The MFHC Board of Directors will hire a national search firm to commence the recruitment process for the organization’s next CEO and hopes to have Brooks’ successor hired by mid-summer 2023.

According to MFHC Board of Directors Chair Sydney Schalit, “We’re grateful to Ross for his leadership of Mountain Family for more than a decade, growing the organization into the affordable, equitable, and integrated medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare home for 24,000 people across Garfield, Eagle and Pitkin Counties. While the Board is sad to see him depart, he is leaving the organization in great shape and the incoming CEO will be poised for success. We will begin the CEO search process in April and we look forward to recruiting a dynamic, community-centered CEO to lead the organization forward in the future.”

Interested applicants should watch MFHC’s career page for the CEO job posting in April. Please do not contact the MFHC Board of Directors directly.
Colorado to Begin Medicaid Re-Enrollment in May 2023
Colorado will begin re-determining Medicaid recipients’ eligibility starting in May 2023. All current Medicaid enrollees should update their information by visiting Health First Colorado at: Update Your Address - Health First Colorado. In addition, MFHC patients seeking to explore health insurance coverage options are encouraged to connect with MFHC’s Outreach and Enrollment teams by calling 833-273-6627 or emailing EnrollmentHelp@mountainfamily.org

Background: During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE), states were incentivized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) to keep Medicaid beneficiaries continuously enrolled in coverage. As a result, Medicaid enrollment surged dramatically throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA) delinked the PHE and the Medicaid continuous enrollment policy nationwide. The PHE will end on May 11, 2023, and the CAA ends continuous enrollment in Medicaid this Spring. The state of Colorado will begin re-determining Medicaid eligibility starting May 1, 2023, and projects that 16-18% of current Medicaid enrollees will lose their Medicaid coverage over the coming year as a result of the Medicaid re-determination process.

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, experts from the George Washington University Geiger Gibson Center discuss how the unwinding is likely to unfold, highlighting key issues and concerns for patients and states.
