SEPTEMBER ZOOM GENERAL MEETING
Guest Speaker: Ross Gerber

Topic: "Innovations in Technology and the Effects on Our Lives"

Ross Gerber was the BMG guest speaker for September. He discussed and outlined many expected changes in technology and society in the years to come. It should be an interesting and exciting program learning about the many developments likely to appear and affect our lives.

ZOOM GENERAL MEETINGS ARE BACK
As the Covid-19 pandemic finally begins to subside and diminish, we can once more anticipate resuming our monthly meetings and breakfasts. In fact, had it not been for the late summer resurgence of the Covid Delta variant, then September was to have been the month when the BMG restarted its in-person breakfasts and speakers. Unfortunately, as all surely understand, there is still concern regarding the wisdom of large group gatherings and therefore out of an abundance of caution we will continue to gather virtually until it is safe to do otherwise.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP ACTIVITIES

The Special Interest Groups (SIG) have long been a way for members to meet and socialize outside of the monthly breakfast meetings. Several of the SIGs have been affected by the Covid-19 restrictions, but others are up and running and welcoming any and all BMG members.

Members desiring to join a SIG, or wishing for more information can contact Bernie Schiffer at 1-323-855-1789, or at email schiffer_b@yahoo.com

STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
BRANDEIS MEN’S GROUP STEERING COMMITTEE MINUTES

Wednesday, August 25, 2021

  • At 10:05 AM, the Zoom meeting of the Steering Committee of the Brandeis Men’s Group (BMG), a sub-group of the Los Angeles Women’s Brandeis National Committee (BNC), was called to order by President Louis Bernstein. A quorum was recognized.

  • Attendees: Randy Barnes, Louis Bernstein, Al Dubin, Sheldon Ellis, Arnie Geffner, Bernd Givon, Mike Goldberg. Howard Green, John Harris, Harold Katzman, Murray Kornblit, Mel Miller, Gerry Sallus, Bernie Schiffer, Bernie Schneier, Bernie Schweitzer, Stan Weinberg and Jerry Weinstein were present.
  • Absentees: Phil Greenwald and Richard Hirschkoff

  • Treasurer Bernie Schneier gave a detailed report, and extensive questions and answers ensued. President Bernstein emphasized the importance for all BMG members to pay individual annual dues in the amount of $60.00 (or $100.00 for a couple) to the BNC, and $50.00 to the BMG. It was noted that dues for BMG members have increased this year to include all fees normally due when joining a special interest group. The Treasurer’s Report was unanimously approved.

  • Membership Committee Chairman Howard Green raised the issue of the BMG
  • website being accurate and current. This issue was discussed by Murray Kornblit and others. Randy Barnes will investigate the status of our BMG website, particularly its link to the next BMG General Meeting (GM), and report back. No Minutes or Financial Reports are to be made a part of our website. and personal information is to be limited to that for “Contact Persons,” only.

  • The sensitive matter of support from Brandeis University (BU) for LA BMG was discussed and debated. Of concern is whether or not the university could/should do more to facilitate speakers, advertising, information, etc. for the local BMG group.

  • Murray Kornblit reported ongoing efforts to create a BMG Facebook page. It is about one-half finished. President Bernstein provided a contact point at Brandeis University who may be able to help.

  • Bernie Schiffer asked that the 60 former BMG members be contacted. Stan Weinberg’s Telephone Committee will do that.

  • President Bernstein questioned whether the September 2021 BMG General Meeting should be in person or on Zoom. It was noted that sections of the Culver City meeting place recently have opened to the public, but other areas remain closed off. Secretary Sheldon Ellis made a motion for for the monthly meeting to be via Zoom, and following comments by Steering Committee members Mel Miller and Murray Kornblit, it was unanimously voted to have the September 2021 General Meeting via “Zoom.” Stan Weinberg’s Telephone Committee is to inform members.

  • President Bernstein suggested contacting the Metropolitan Transit Authority for a speaker to report on the status of completion of its Purple Line through Beverly Hills to Century City. Speakers Chairman Harold Katzman suggested having a speaker from the California Environmental Protection Agency.

  • SIG Chairman Bernie Schiffer reported on the status of some of our SIGs. The Legal Affairs group will meet on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 1:00 PM. The Opera group will meet on Friday, September 27, at 10:00 AM. Members of the Walking group continue to meet weekly on Friday at 9:30 AM, which conflicts with some Opera meetings. The Current Events group will meet on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at 10:00 AM. The Chess group convenes at the pleasure of its four members. The History group will meet on Monday, September 13, at 10:00 AM, and will continue to discuss “Great Wars of the Ages.” The Trips SIG is currently on hiatus but will hopefully be reconstituted once the pandemic subsides further. A possible Horological SIG was mentioned, but no action was taken at this time.

  • The Minutes of the July 15, 2021 Steering Committee meeting were approved.

  • No New Business or Old Business was presented.

  • The meeting of the SC was adjourned at 11:05 AM.
