Duke CFAR awarded supplement through CFAR Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Pipeline Initiative for program led by Dr. Nwora Lance Okeke

The Duke Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) has received an administrative supplement of $150,000 as part of the CFAR Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Pipeline Initiative (CDEIPI). Duke CFAR’s submission to the program is entitled: “Evidence2Practice (E2P): Leveraging implementation science to recruit HBCU/MSI students into careers in HIV research”

Evidence2Practice (E2P) is an intensive on-campus workshop-based initiative with the goal of increasing student interest in careers in HIV science, through providing an experience-based introduction to implementation science. The program developed out of a 4-year long collaborative partnership between Dr. Nwora Lance Okeke, MD, MPH (Assistant Professor- Division of Infectious Diseases), Kenric B. Ware, PharmD (Associate Professor of Pharmacy- South University) and Russell Campbell (Deputy Director, Office of HIV/AIDS Network Coordination(HANC)). Through this partnership, Dr. Okeke, Dr. Ware and Mr. Campbell, created the Bringing PrEP to Campus (BPC) program in 2018 aimed at gaining the input of students and administrators at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to create campus-specific strategies for HIV prevention. This program was anchored by the Be the Generation curriculum created by Mr. Campbell and HANC’s Legacy Project. Evidence2Practice is a reconfiguration of the BPC program, created to better respond to CDEIPI’s call to increase HBCU students’ interest in careers in HIV science. E2P will be led by Dr. Okeke and Dr. Amy Corneli (Associate Professor of Population Health) in partnership with Dr. Ware and Mr. Campbell.

Workshop Series: Quantitative Methods for HIV Researchers

January & February 2022

Registration is now open for the Quantitative Methods for HIV Researchers - Statistics Workshops. In Part II of this workshop series, attendees will learn important concepts in statistics and perform statistical analyses using two case studies modified from real HIV data. We will introduce different types of clinical research studies, perform exploratory data analysis with numerical and graphical summaries and introduce hypothesis testing in the first half of the series. In the second half, we will fit generalized linear models and introduce survival analysis and longitudinal analyses.

Summer Opportunities

Applications being accepted for the Duke Quantitative 2022 Summer Internships in HIV/AIDS

Duke Quantitative Summer Internships in HIV/AIDS are paid internships during Summer 2022 to conduct research in HIV/AIDS for graduate students in quantitative disciplines. Areas of research may include data analysis, visualization, machine learning, computer simulation, mathematical modeling, or device engineering. Interns are jointly mentored by an HIV research scientist and a quantitative faculty member (who could be your current research advisor if appropriate). Interns will gain valuable hands-on experience in a collaborative setting, increased knowledge in HIV/AIDS research, and will strengthen oral and written communication skills. Interns will also have the opportunity to present their work at national and international HIV/AIDS conferences.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as long as internship slots are available.

Center for AIDS Prevention Studies and UCSF-Bay Area CFAR accepting applications for Visiting Professor Program

The Center for AIDS Prevention Studies in collaboration with the UCSF-Bay Area Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is now accepting applications for the Visiting Professor Program. They anticipate a return to an in-person program hosted in San Francisco from Monday, June 13 through Friday, July 22, 2022. The program offers three tracks, supported by R25s from NIAID, NIMH, and NIDA, to appeal to scientists with a broad range of research interests

This program is designed to assist investigators interested in conducting HIV-related research that has implications for U.S. racial and ethnic minority communities to strengthen the investigators’ programs of research and obtain NIH funding. Scientists in the program have access to the expertise of a team of mentors who are successful at conducting NIH-funded research that impacts HIV-related health disparities in racial and ethnic minority communities.

Program participants take part in the six-week summer program at UCSF for three consecutive summers, with mentoring and distance learning year-round. Participants are appointed and paid as Visiting Professors in the UCSF Department of Medicine during the summer program, and also receive $20,000 to support acquiring research skills and analyzing data, to facilitate the completion of an R-level grant application
