Welcome New Staff

Michelle is excited to join the OSS team as the Student & Family Coordinator. She brings with her 35 years of experience as an educator and educational leader. During her first 15 years, she served as a secondary teacher of mathematics and later Department Coordinator for grades 7-12. As math teacher/coordinator she developed an annual Women in STEM Symposium which brought graduates in STEM fields to offer workshops for grades 5-8 girls and their mothers.

As her love for collaborating with teams on lesson design grew, Michelle transitioned into her role as K-12 Director of Curriculum and later Assistant Superintendent.

Tashianna Pires ’12 joins the team as an OSS alum. Stepping into the role of Admissions and Outreach Coordinator, Tashy serves as the point of contact for new students and families. She also works alongside Amy Sanders in the Graduate Support Office. In 2020 Tashy earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the UMass Dartmouth, followed by a Master of Business Administration in 2021.

Tashy is also the owner of Taj Collective Co., a local small business specializing in crafting unique, handmade clay jewelry. It is her goal to provide women with a modern, chic outlet for self-love, self-expression, and positivity.

Dr. Carolyn Roberts joins the OSS community as the 5th & 6th grade science teacher and head of the Science Department. Her academic background is in earth and planetary science, remote sensing, glaciology, and volcanology. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State University, and and her master’s and Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo.

Carolyn strives to make science accessible to everyone and to foster each student’s innate curiosity. She developed her love for teaching while performing outreach activities during graduate school, and has been working in primary and secondary science education since 2021.

Community Connections

As a Community Core school, OSS believes in the spirit of volunteerism and activism, that leadership comes in many valuable forms and should be cultivated in all of us. With this in mind, we have designed and implemented a Community Connections class for 7th and 8th grade students.

In this new class, students build on their understanding of our core value of Civic Engagement by identifying ways in which to engage in meaningful action, while fostering their own passions and interests. With teacher and mentor support, students identify issues that matter to them and work in a self-directed way to affect change.

This engagement will look different for every student: some students may choose to intern at local organizations, some may support online initiatives on global issues, some may lead workshops at educational conferences, while others may choose to participate in local advocacy efforts through social media posts, letters to representatives, and school-wide presentations. No matter the form the engagement takes, this class will offer meaningful opportunities for service and help students to further develop as active members of their community, becoming responsible citizens and role models for others.

Did You Know?

(Highlighting everyday awesomeness at OSS)

On Monday mornings we invite interested community members to present to our students as part of our Morning Speaker Program, a program that has been running since the School opened its doors in 2008. This year, our first visit was from Cantor Nathaniel Schudrich, the chazzan of Tifereth Israel Synagogue.

The Speakers’ Program is a wonderful way to learn more about OSS and to meet the students and staff. If you or someone you know has interest in being a Morning Speaker, please contact the Head of School, Sarah Herman.
