The Color of Law
LWV Arlington Heights, Mt. Prospect, and Buffalo Grove will be sponsoring a virtual book discussion of "The Color of Law" on Friday, February 25, from 7:00 - 9:00pm. Exploding the myth of de facto segregation arising from private prejudice or the unintended consequences of economic forces, Richard Rothstein describes how the American government systematically imposed residential segregation: with undisguised racial zoning; public housing that purposefully segregated previously mixed communities; subsidies for builders to create whites-only suburbs; tax exemptions for institutions that enforced segregation; and support for violent resistance to African Americans in white neighborhoods. Long time member Sylvia Christmas's husband, Larry, recently passed away. Larry Christmas worked as a city and regional planner before he became Oak Park Village President in 1993. You can read his obituary here. Our sympathies go out to Sylvia and her family.
