BALLET VERO BEACH AND THE VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART ANNOUNCE DECO DANCE

Company Returns to VBMA in honor of 10th Anniversary Season

As part of the company’s 10th Anniversary Season, Ballet Vero Beach makes a triumphant return to The Vero Beach Museum of Art to put their signature spin on Rolling Sculpture: Streamlined Art Deco Automobiles and Motorcycles. The program will feature Divertissement Nostalgique by Camilo A. Rodriguez (Ballet Master and Principal Dancer for Ballet Vero Beach), which highlights ballet’s march of progression from classic to modern, world premiere works by Rodriguez and Adam Schnell (Artistic Director and CEO of Ballet Vero Beach) set to music by Art Deco icons Igor Stravinsky and Charlie Chaplin, and a rollicking Charleston inspired finale to showcase the dance of the era.

Ballet Vero Beach has a long history with the Vero Beach Museum of Art engaging in near yearly, and sometimes bi-annual performances, from 2014-2018. These engagement helped establish the identity of the company in its infancy as well as serve as an important repertory development source. Indeed many of the works premiered at VBMA have gone on to become touch points in BVB’s permanent repertoire.

To that end, both Schnell and Rodriguez are contributing new works to the program, and Charleston!, the rollicking finale to the evening has been choreographed by BVB favorite Matthew Lovegood. Rather than directly interpret the cars and bikes on display in the galleries, VBMA has given BVB the leeway to expose audiences both to dances inspired by the Art Deco movement themselves, and the opportunity to showcase how dance, visual art, fashion, and life in general are always intertwined.

Deco Dance will take place Saturday March 18 at 7:30pm in the Museum’s Leonhardt Auditorium. Tickets are $30 for Museum members and BVB subscribers, and $36 for nonmembers. Tickets include early admission to the galleries (starting at 6:30pm) to view Rolling Sculpture: Streamlined Art Deco Automobiles and Motorcycles

Reserve online at vbmuseum.org, or call 772-231-0707 ext. 116. Ballet Vero Beach subscribers must call to reserve the VBMA member price.

Bob Ferreira - Still a Freshman After All These Years

I’ve been counting the days leading up to the Treasure Coast Jazz Society’s special concert at Oak Harbor March 18. The Four Freshmen will be there in a long-sold out performance, their first on the Treasure Coast in more than a decade. For each of their appearances here over the years, I’ve enjoyed talking with Bob Ferreira, a member of the group since 1992. Long before that I managed to snag an interview with one of the early members, Bob Flanagan, and even earlier, back in my high school newspaper days, I was one of the lucky young reporters to get an interview for The Red and Black.

A junior high school friend, Kerry Kissinger, introduced me to the sound that years later would inspire Brian Wilson, a Beach Boys icon. Kerry remembers when he first heard that unforgettable harmony, on a covertly listened to radio show out of Chicago. “I always had the volume turned way down low so my parents wouldn't know I was listening to the radio at that hour.” Later, “I saw them in person everywhere from Penn State University to the Gas Light Club in Chicago …. Their sound has been indelibly imprinted in my brain and so I know the words to just about every song they ever recorded.”

Kerry and his high school-sweetheart wife, Janice, will also be in the audience for the Vero Beach concert. Will he be able to resist singing along from the audience?

In 2005, I somehow convinced the then-executive director of Riverside Theatre that the Four Freshmen could fill the house (and they almost did!), and 18 years later, my conversations are still with Ferreira, drums and bass voice, now in his almost-unheard-of 31st year with the ensemble.

Ferreira said he was a late bloomer for a professional musician, beginning on drums when he and some friends started a rock band in their high school sophomore year. A year later, he joined the choir, leading him down the vocalist road. This long tenure with the Four Freshmen wasn’t the career path he had in mind when he was studying for a degree in music education and freelancing in classical voice work, however. “I was being groomed by my vocal coach to pursue a career in opera,” Ferreira said. After a lead role in a college production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, “I caught the opera bug … and absolutely loved it. … I definitely would have pursued that path had the Freshmen thing not worked out.” Luckily for audiences, it did.

As a college student, he was recommended by his Edmonds Community College music professor and short-time Four Freshmen musician himself, Kirk Marcy. When a spot opened up, “they needed someone who could sing and play drums, so I was one of the names brought to the group.”

Thirty years later, the Four Freshmen #27 have a new look but still the famous Freshmen sound, with Ryan Howe - lead voice, Tommy Boynton - 2nd voice, and Jake Baldwin - 3rd voice / trumpet / bass trumpet, joining Ferreira - 4th voice/drums.

The policy of hiring a new member from internal recommendations is longstanding. “We do not hold open auditions. Word of mouth or our personal connections are what we have found to work the best. … We audition the person as much as the musician because personal chemistry is as important as musical talent.” It can take a while for a new member of the group to settle in, Ferreira said, but “This current group gelled from its first show with our newest member, Ryan ....”

Traveling for performances can be tough, but the guys have found a way to relax on the road. “Four words,” Ferreira said. “We love disc golf! … We always try to find a disc golf course to play on days off or even mornings before shows. … It has been another way this group has connected off the stage and just one more reason we look forward to hanging out on the road.”

Now in his early 50s, Ferreira has no plans to retire. “… I love what I do more than ever and I believe I am doing what I do better now than ever before, so I can’t see myself retiring … . I love the road, I love our fans and friends, I love the guys … and I love this group. I think I’ll stick around for a while.”

Inside the Music

The musicians who became the Four Freshmen got started performing at family reunions in the 1940s. The road to success was long and winding, with a few personnel changes along the way. Read the long history of the group on the website.

The Technical Part

Ferreira talked about the appeal of the Four Freshmen sound. “Our brand of harmony is unique to other vocal groups of the time. The Freshmen were one of the first groups to utilize the top tenor on the melody, normally handled by the second tenor in barbershop, or with a female lead on top. The top melody was and is a very challenging part for a male and takes a special quality of talent … to pull it off effectively.”

Bob Flanagan, one of the earliest of the Four Freshmen, wrote arrangements in the very beginning, when they were developing the sound, Ferreira said. “Most of the Capitol arrangements were penned by Dick Reynolds, Pete Rugolo, and Kenny Albers during those years at Capitol.” After that, group members did the arrangements, with occasional input from an “arranger we dig.” A good friend, “monster musician … Riley Helgeson … penned the opening song (on the most recent album, The Four Freshmen), From This Moment On, and it’s a burner!” A Ken Albers arrangement of Blame It on My Youth, never performed or recorded by a Freshmen group, is also on the album. On this one, Emmet Cohen plays piano but the traveling setup is guitar, bass, drums, and trumpet, Ferreira said.

With a group that’s been around for 74 years, there are bound to be YouTube recordings that are good and “some we wish would go away! (LOL) I would suggest that anyone looking through our YouTube library check out groups from the different eras ….” Ferreira said, “This group … has a rich history that deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated.”

He explains for viewers who notice that the full head of hair he had in the early days is long gone: “I think Mother Nature decided that for me! I shaved my head 20 years ago because … Well, it was going to happen whether I liked it or not, so why not do it on my own terms!”

Visit the website, fourfreshmen.com, for everything there is to know about the Four Freshmen, from the early days to 2023. You’ll learn about the Four Freshmen Society — more like friends and family than fans — and The Four Freshmen Music Foundation.

There’s also a chart listing the many iterations of the group through the years.

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Back in Vero Beach

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, (CMS) is one of eleven constituents of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the largest performing arts complex in the world. The Chamber Music Society has its home in Alice Tully Hall - the finest hall in the world for chamber music. Through its performance, education, and recording/broadcast activities, it draws more people to chamber music than any other organization of its kind.

This season the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center has been featured in three concerts for the 2022-2023 season.

The final concert, March 20, at 7 p.m., will feature works by Brahms and Arensky.

Suzanne Davidson, executive director of CMS, said, "As Pastor Anna Copeland (of CCOVB) has explained, the Community Church has a deep commitment to inviting music into the Church because 'Music is the language of God.'

"We have been incredibly impressed with the depth of this commitment. Community is at the core of what we build when we bring the finest chamber music around the world, and Community is, of course, at the core of the Community Church.  We feel privileged to work with Pastor Anna Copeland, Andrew Galuska and Rachel Carter, to bring great chamber music to the Church’s beautiful sanctuary and its welcoming community."

And the audiences have been overwhelmingly welcoming. Davidson said, "We’ve been thrilled with the reception that we’ve received to our concerts and look forward to a long and inspiring future bringing the unique programs and international roster of artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to join the rich cultural landscape of Vero Beach.”

Two Shows — Count 'em — Two at Lighthouse ArtCenter

Lighthouse ArtCenter members were invited show their latest and best art piece in this annual Members' Show & Sale exhibition, now in its 45th year. Artists working in two mediums were allowed to show one piece from each. Concurrently on exhibit in the Schorr Gallery, Best of the Clubs is on display.

These exhibitions provide an opportunity for cross pollination of ideas and techniques between the various clubs and the Members of the ArtCenter. Jewelry, photography, glass, ceramics, sculpture, and painting are just some of the mediums on exhibit and awards are offered in each of these categories.

The opening reception is March 23, 5-7 p.m.

The Best of the Clubs Art Exhibition runs concurrently with the Members' Show with the opening reception held on March 30, 5-7 p.m.

Best of the Clubs provides a window into the world of the artists who reside in our gated communities from Palm Beach to Martin County. Some are seasonal residents and some are here year 'round, but all are on exhibit at the invitation of Lighthouse ArtCenter's curator, Janeen Mason. She visited art shows in clubhouses from West Palm Beach to Stuart and carefully selected artwork that represents the very best on display.

Jewelry, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and painting are just some of the mediums on exhibit and awards are offered in each of these categories.

Specifically aimed at altering the way young people enter the field, this two year program allows accepted fellows to dance full time with Ballet Vero Beach, receive their AA or BA through Indian River State College (paid for by the company), and experience hands on training in arts literacy and arts integration through delivering the company's education and engagement initiatives. To apply for the initiative click Apply.

The Riverside Dance Festival is a unique experience in Intensive Summer Study presented by Riverside Theatre and Ballet Vero Beach. Accepted students will experience day-to-day life with Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre.
