When Lindsey Wagner (G’24) first learned of the opportunity to teach and work in a very rural area of Alaska through her undergraduate university, she found little to be excited about. Over time, she learned to love the community and hopes to return after earning a graduate degree from the School of Nursing.

MedStar Health announced that Nawar Shara, PhD, will serve as chief of research data science for MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI), bringing more than 20 years of experience at MHRI to the newly created role. An associate professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and co-director of the MHRI’s Center for Biostatistics, Informatics and Data Science, Shara is a seasoned investigator, leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning in health care research.

Bonnie Carney, PhD, assistant professor in the departments of biochemistry and surgery, has been named the second Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science KL2 Scholar in its highly competitive 2023 cycle. As a KL2 Scholar, she will investigate extrinsic/non-autonomous and intrinsic/autonomous melanocyte alterations in cells and tissues derived from post-burn hypertrophic scar with altered pigmentation. Her major project focuses on “uncovering the mechanistic pathophysiology behind post-burn hypopigmented hypertrophic scar development.”

Jessica Jones, PhD, professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology & Cellular Biology, has begun her two-year term as chair of the Medical Center Caucus of the Faculty Senate. Jones has been a member of the Georgetown University School of Medicine faculty since 2004. She takes the reigns from George Luta, PhD, who served as chair for two terms.
