I have separated my life in time, marked by one great divide: the death of my sister Catherine. She died of a heart attack at just 23 years old. My life before felt secure. My life immediately after was riddled with questions and fear. Why did this happen? What did this mean for me? What did this mean for the rest of my family? I chose to lean into the fear and look for answers. My search led me to the Family Heart Foundation, and it is here I found hope.
Last year the Family Heart Foundation announced the first ever Lp(a) Awareness Day and it went global! We reached over 83 million people. Now on this second Lp(a) Awareness Day, we aim to reach even more. Having elevated lipoprotein(a) is not a death sentence. Knowing your number gives you knowledge, and knowledge always gives you the upper hand. I encourage you to speak with your doctor and request a blood test for Lp(a) in addition to a standard lipid panel (“cholesterol levels”). Then, if you need help knowing what to do next, or you need support, contact the Family Heart Foundation.
The Family Heart Foundation has had an incredible impact on the diagnosis rate of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) over the past 11 years and made it possible to measure this progress. We are taking that success and the lessons learned to move the needle even faster for elevated Lp(a).
In the last year we have increased our research on Lp(a), and the Foundation helped find the first important piece to this puzzle – our starting point. Though it should not have shocked me, I was surprised to learn that less than 1% of people have ever had their Lp(a) level tested! And unsurprisingly, it’s only a handful of providers ordering this test.
Going forward the Family Heart Foundation is working on an impactful collaboration with some of the best hospitals in the nation. This project includes education for providers and patients to improve awareness and knowledge of this incredibly prevalent, but underdiagnosed condition. This is an important step to help increase testing and identification of people living with this risk factor.
I have shared the turning point of my life story. I now invite you to join the Family Heart Foundation and me as we fight to change the ending.
