A Message from our co-presidents
Laurie Rotman and Mark Wilen
Dear HBT Family and Friends,
We are thrilled to announce that Rabbi Aliza Schwartz will be joining Temple Hillel B’nai Torah on August 1. Much of August will be dedicated to an orientation period to help Rabbi Aliza integrate into our community. During this time, she will also collaborate with the Avodah Committee to plan for the upcoming High Holy Days, which begin on October 2. Membership and High Holy Day packets will be mailed the week of August 5. Please return them promptly.
Rabbi Aliza will be attending Shabbat services throughout the month of August. August 12 she will lead an extended Moment for Ma’ariv and Tish B’Av service. She will be on a previously planned vacation from August 15 – the 21. We will share more details about her regular schedule, office hours and days off when she returns from vacation.
Rabbi Aliza will lead her first Shabbat service on September 7.
We are also planning more official welcomes for Rabbi Aliza in early September, so please stay tuned for more information. To read more about Rabbi Aliza, please click HERE.
In other news, we are enhancing our efforts to increase membership and improve our community engagement. As part of this, we are stepping up our social media presence and updating our website content. We are seeking volunteers with interest or experience in social media or anyone willing to lend a helping hand in showcasing our community at its best.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

In preparation, please read about the striking of the rock:
Numbers 20:1-13.
For the incident of the spies, please read:

Extended Moment of Ma'ariv and Erev Tisha B'Av service
- Monday, August 12
- 7:30pm - 9:00pm
- in-person and on zoom
Tisha B’Av, meaning literally “the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av,” is often thought about as the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. It is the day on which several disasters for our people occurred, most prominently the destruction of both the First and Second Temples. Our Jewish year cycle offers us, with Tisha b'Av, a container for this grief, mourning, heartbreak, and sadness -- and it is a communal container. We are together, as a people, in heartbreak.
On Tisha b’Av, we do a public, communal reading of the Book of Lamentations, a collection of lyrical laments that describe the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE. The title, in Hebrew, for this book is just one word, and it is a desperate question: “Eicha (אֵיכָ֣ה)” - literally, “How?” or “How could this have happened?”
Sometimes, in grief, pain, and shock, this question is the truest thing we can say. On Tisha b’Av, we say it publicly, as a community, together.
We look forward to this intimate, heartfelt service, where we will sing, be in silence, chant from the book of Eicha, and most importantly, be together.

The transfer of sacred
materials from
Genizah to Grave
All throughout the year JCAM collects damaged holy books, used papers, and irreparably damaged Judaica from individuals, various community groups and organizations for our book burial. These items are stored throughout the year in the community Genizah (depository) prior to the book burial.
JCAM believes it is our responsibility to be the bridge between our cemetery properties and the community. Part of the way we bridge this gap is by making sure that sacred items that are at the end of their useable lives, are properly and respectfully discarded.
We encourage the community to join us in this unique Jewish tradition! It allows for the community to witness and participate in the depth and importance of the Jewish communal responsibility while learning about the proper handling of Jewish sacred materials.
| | |
A massive grave is prepared to accept sacred books and artifacts
Once the Genizah is at capacity, JCAM prepares a massive grave to accept the materials for burial within the Centre Street, West Roxbury cemeteries. Thousands of Jewish books and other Judaica are carefully carried and placed in the grave.

The conservative think tank, Heritage Foundation released a series of proposals called Project 2025, a blueprint that would change our democracy in ways the Founding Fathers could never have imagined and would fundamentally alter our country’s future. Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action (JALSA) is sponsoring a zoom meeting discussing Project 2025 and ways people can stand up to the report’s extreme proposals by fighting for issues like LGBTQ and abortion rights, among others. Discussions will focus on ways individuals can get involved and opportunities for synagogues to join this fight. This event is non-partisan 501(c)(3) friendly.
Once you sign up, please let Lisa know you are attending by emailing her Mailto:hbt@howlingwolfmedia.com?subject=project2025
