Alfonso Mannetta
Submitted by Rosalinda Mannetta
lifetime Little Italy resident
  • In Carabinieri uniform in Rome, Italia, is my father, Alfonso Mannetta, November 1948
  • On a boat in Calabria, Italia, is my mother, Gioconda Simari, circa 1948
"I am Signorina Rosalinda Gioconda Mannetta, first-generation and proud daughter of professore and carabiniere, Alfonso Mannetta, and Gioconda Simari; honored sister of Elia Mannetta; and mamma of Marco Mannetta. I am a lifetime resident, promoter and defender of Little Italy, having lived at the same address on South Exeter Street since my birth in 1957. I am a lifetime parishioner of St. Leo the Great, alumna of St. Leo's School, member of LINA/Little Italy Neighborhood Association, and a Little Italy Lodge trustee and Arbitration Board member.

For over 16 years, I have taught various levels of la bellissima lingua italiana - the beautiful Italian language - at Pandola Learning Center housed in St. Leo's School. As well, there I began the annual Ferragosto celebration. My brother, Elia, began the Little Italy Lodge #2286 in 1973; the youngest president at that time. At age 15, I was the youngest Recording Secretary. My family and I (especially my brother) have carried Baltimore's Little Italy in our hearts all over the world and have brought countless visitors from around the globe to visit our Piccola Italia. Many times we have initiated twin city exchanges of students and dignitaries."

"I LOVE IT! You write with such joy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for spreading the story. It’s people like you who keep me going!"

"Thank you so much for including the ACIM/American Citizens for Italian Matters gala flyer and information about what ACIM does. You are wonderful. Loved reading about Mount Rushmore ... will add the book you mentioned on my book list. Thanks so much for all
you do!"
~ Maureen Chandler

"Thank you for another great newsletter, you are just amazing. The article about Mount Rushmore was so interesting. I hope Luigi Del Bianco's grandson, Lou, gets a chance to come to our Little Italy - and we get the pleasure of watching his one-man show!"
~ Susanne Spinnato Walmsley

"I am so happy for you to have seen Mount Rushmore and thrilled that you shared it with us. The story is amazing. I pray to God this country will continue to venerate Rushmore with all its due respect and honor deserved. So many dear treasures have been thrashed in recent years with little wisdom and even less judgement. First time I saw the Leaning Tower of Pisa, my mind went numb as the child of an Italian mason. Thanking YOU for everything you do for this circulation and community!"
~ Nick Rizzi

"Fantastic story! What a great story by Suzanna Rosa Molino. Many thanks for sharing it!"
~ Clinton Macsherry, Director of Public Policy, Maryland Family Network

"Thank you for sharing your story about Mount Rushmore! While I had heard/knew an Italian immigrant had been the chief carver, and as the grandson of four Italian immigrants - like yourself - it still filled my heart with pride!"
~ Greg Pannoni

"Just wanted to compliment you on the excellent work on all of your publications. Great layout with all we need to know about the neighborhood. I look forward to it regularly. Thanks for all you do."
~ Mike Caruso

"The newsletter looks great! Thanks so much for including the news and requests regarding the Italian Heritage Festival on October 7."
~ Mike Gallerizzo

"So thankful for the Little Italy Lodge Foundation awarding my daughter, Isabella, another scholarship. It has helped us tremendously and we are very appreciative."
~ Roland Keh, former owner of Amicci's Restaurant, Little Italy
  • (Editor's note: Isabella Keh's name was incorrectly listed in the August issue as Isabella Keh Elliott. The Elliott name was for her Jerome & Angela Elliott Scholarship for $6,000.)

"A great story of one of our Italian ancestors. Mount Rushmore is also on my list of places to visit."
~ Vincent Savarese

"Un gran ringraziamento! Thank you for the writeup and promotion of Filitalia Baltimore in your newsletter. It is so nicely done! We are very appreciative!"
~ Dr. Elizabeth Pease, Filitalia Baltimore Chapter President

"Always a good read! Thank you, Suzanna!"
~ Albert Marra

"About a year ago through your organization, I was in touch with someone who was descended from the same family as I am - the Puccia family in Revere and Boston, Massachusetts. I have forgotten her name and do not have her contact info. Is anyone able to put me in touch with her?"
~ Steve MacKinnon (please email Steve directly if you have info)
