GOHi facilitates whole genome sequencing training

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) established an integrated pathogen Genomic Core Laboratory that performs genetic sequencing activities across programs and response actions. These activities include detecting COVID-19 variants and identifying and characterizing emerging threats, such as antimicrobial resistance. The Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) assessed these capacities to ensure the lab was up to date, including the availability of a trained workforce to conduct routing molecular sequencing activities.

GOHi participates in study of leishmaniasis

Researchers participating in the study of leishmaniasis gathered in Nairobi to discuss the scope of the project and determine objectives. The project is funded through a U01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study ecotypes driving the transmission and pathogenesis of visceral leishmaniasis and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasisin Eastern Africa. Participants included representatives from Global One Health (Ethiopia), Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), University of Khartoum (Sudan), the Institute of Topical Medicine (Belgium), and Ohio State's Global One Health initiative, NIH and the University of San Francisco (United States).

Inaugural workshop held on immunization research

The Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) and other partners, organized the first Expanded Program on Immunization Research workshop in Ethiopia, March 16-17. The objective of the workshop was to share information about different research evidence related to immunization programs, and collect evidence for the effective implementation of programs, strategies and policies.

Lee receives CFAES Innovator of the Year award

Jiyoung Lee, a professor in the College of Public Health and in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), was awarded the CFAES Innovator of the Year award. She received the award for her track record of conducting trend-setting research about pathogen transmission and exposure pathways and their impact on human health. Lee is also a faculty member with the Global One Health initiative.

Open-source health information management system training held in Ethiopia

In March, the Ohio State Global One Health initiative (GOHi) co-organized a four-day training on the open-source health information management system DHIS2 for 72 surveillance officers and laboratory experts. GOHi organized the training with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) National Data Management Center for Health and the National Influenza Laboratory.
