Celebrating Black History Month at SFD
Black History Month is a designated period of time we use to celebrate the contributions African Americans have made throughout the history of the United States, all the while enduring struggles for justice and equality.
The Student Organization for Black Empowerment and the World Cultures Club at DeSales will continue our efforts throughout the month of February to dispel stereotypes, empower all students to participate in positive change in our community, and continue a very necessary dialogue. Dr Carter G.Woodson once said, “If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thoughts of the world, and stands in danger of being exterminated.” During this month, let's all come together to “Make History” and continue dialogue on topics relevant to the black community.
We will celebrate by:
- highlighting Black Americans on the morning announcements
- highlighting prominent Black Americans on the TV monitors throughout the building
- gathering for a school-wide assembly on February 23rd for Black History Month
- host a SFD Book Club discussion highlighting black stories, including the books Dear Martin, The Hate U Give and Stamped, on February 24 at 3:10pm in the Media Center

Merciful God, thank you for creating us to reflect the diversity in the world. As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we thank you for the opportunities to see the rich contributions of black people, contributions which have often gone ignored or denied. Forgive us, O Lord, our unwillingness to see beyond the color of a person's skin. Forgive us, that we allow ourselves to be distracted by unfamiliar accents. We thank you for people of color who have contributed to the growth of our country. For those who have come from Asia and Africa and the Americas to share their insights of what it means to be a child of God. May we celebrate their presence among us, today and always. For we ask this prayer, through the name of Jesus Christ and in the power of the Spirit.
