The Goldwater Scholarship is a prestigious national program that recognizes outstanding achievements in science and mathematics. Maya was one of 417 students selected from a highly competitive pool of over 1,200 applicants nationwide.

How did you get started doing this research? How did you find your mentors?

I started doing research during my freshman year in the FYRE program. I was paired with the Rice lab and have continued with Dr. Rice since. I currently work with William Best, a second-year biochemistry Ph.D. candidate; our projects evaluate long-term use and efficacy of a combination treatment for multi-drug resistant pathogens. I have been primarily focused on resistant strains of P. aeruginosa. It kind of just worked out that I was interested in Will’s project, and he was willing to mentor an undergrad! I have learned everything from lab mentors and other undergrads and owe them so much for their time and support over the past few years.

What advice do you have for other students who are interested in doing undergraduate research? Is there anything you wish you had known earlier?

It is easy to feel completely clueless and unproductive when starting on research early in college, but if you put forth the time and brain energy you will eventually be trusted to collect data, and as more independence is offered, research gets super exciting! I wish I had known to be more assertive and proactive when proposing experiments because eventually you start understanding what’s going on and practicing effective scientific communication is truly the bread and butter of academia. I would encourage anyone interested in pursuing research to embrace the role of a student and foster healthy communication with their team. The opportunity to work in a lab with any of the outstanding professors at OU is such a gift! Also, use older students or SURA as a resource to find openings for undergrads.

What is your favorite thing about OU?

My favorite thing about OU is the student life and focus on community. I have met so many amazing people over the past few years, and truly believe OU is special because of the dedication that students and faculty have for creating a better OU, Oklahoma, and world. This atmosphere motivates me and has helped me through a tough year.
