WRTA using federal aid now, but seeks additional state funding

The Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA) has solidified its place as a leader in the fare-free public transportation movement, with the WRTA Advisory Board voting unanimously on April 20 to continue operating fare-free through June 2024, thereby becoming the longest-running fare-free transit system in Massachusetts and one of the longest in the country.

Coalition for Safe Drinking Water to Hold Briefing at State House

On May 11 the Coalition for Safe Drinking Water will host an Informational Briefing for Massachusetts legislators and their staff. Sponsored by Sen. Jamie Eldridge, Rep. Dan Sena, and Rep. Smitty Pignatelli, the event will highlight An Act Promoting Drinking Water Quality for All (S.482/H.902), which aims to provide drinking water protections for the 500,000+ Massachusetts residents who rely on private wells. This legislation would enable the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to develop a set of health-based regulations that would ensure minimum statewide water quality standards for private wells, without which many Massachusetts residents remain at risk of consuming water with arsenic, E. coli, PFAS, uranium, and other contaminants. The legislation would also expand an existing state revolving loan fund to assist low-income homeowners in need of remediating contaminated private wells. The briefing will include testimonials from health experts, private well homeowners, and advocates.

Entrepreneurship for All (EforAll), a nonprofit whose mission is to accelerate economic and social impact in the communities it serves through inclusive entrepreneurship, recently celebrated the successful launch of its first Spanish language Business Accelerator program (EparaTodos) at an event held at Nuestra Restaurant on April 20. The free, year-long program includes virtual business classes in a broad array of topics, coupled with mentoring from volunteer business owners and seasoned professionals. The Winter 2022 cohort was comprised of ten individuals starting new businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Since the launch of the Greater Worcester chapter in 2020, which is one of eight sites statewide, the Foundation has provided grants totaling $75,000 to help the organization build its capacity to serve more under-represented entrepreneurs in Central Massachusetts.

"We are thrilled to have a partner like The Health Foundation who shares our commitment to providing better access and support to typically under-represented residents of Central Massachusetts,” said Miguelina Peralta, Executive Director for EforAll/EparaTodos Greater Worcester. She added, “We look forward to providing our no-cost, one-year business training, and mentorship program to the significant population of Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs in our community."

Moving forward, the Spanish-speaking version of the Business Accelerator program, along with the English-speaking counterpart, will be offered twice annually with cohorts of up to fifteen people starting for-profit businesses or nonprofit organizations. Applications are now open for the Summer 2023 cohort. Throughout the year, the organization also holds Pitch Contests where members of the community are invited to present a business idea, receive feedback, encouragement and compete for small cash prizes to help them get started.

By The Numbers - Demographic Survey

Holding Ourselves Accountable

In 2022, the Foundation surveyed members of its Board, Community Members serving on Standing Committees, and staff (a group comprised of 41 individuals) in order to benchmark demographic characteristics and lived experiences. The inaugural survey results show that the demographic profile of the Foundation's leadership, staff, and advisors closely reflects that of Central Massachusetts.

The Foundation just completed the 2023 survey and will provide the results on the website soon.
