Spring is in the air, and another academic year is drawing to a close. We are very excited to announce that our very own, Larry Bauer, will be receiving one of the highest awards on Sunday evening at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Meeting later this week.
I am sure there will be many FMEC’ers in attendance to help Larry celebrate this great honor.

As we think about recognizing one set of residency and medical school graduates and welcoming new classes, it is also a poignant time to connect with the communities we are here to serve. In new programming, the FMEC will be offering a series of webinars focusing on Health Equity and the Social Determinants of Health.
I encourage you to join the members of our Board, national experts and local organizers to learn more about “Food Insecurity and Hunger”, “Parks, Recreation and Fitness” and “Digital Access and Digital Health” (visit the FMEC website for additional details).
And, finally, our Annual Meeting is right around the corner, and we will be gathering near Washington, DC before you know it. In fact, registration for individuals and the Residency Fair is now open and we are accepting applications for student scholarships. FMEC Awards Deadline Extended – Submit by May 6
The FMEC is proud to support leaders in the family medicine community through our Annual Awards Competition. We seek nominations for Leadership Awards (Family Physicians Changing Our World; Mid-Career Faculty Achievement; and Emerging Leaders). We also seek submissions for Creative Expression Awards (This We Believe; Creative Writing; and Family Medicine through the Visual Arts).

Registration is opening for the 2022 FMEC Annual Meeting!

DEI Survey Results
The FMEC Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee appreciates your input! Nearly 80 responses to a recent FMEC survey of members and past meeting attendees has given critical direction to the FMEC’s future activities. You told us you are most interested in learning about recruiting diverse faculty, recruiting diverse students and residents, and mentoring diverse learners – so watch for programs from the FMEC at the 2022 Annual Meeting on those topics. You also told us you wanted the FMEC to focus our efforts on promoting family medicine as a career to those from disadvantaged communities, advancing the diversity of speakers at the Annual Meetings, and creating models or pathways for local engagement between students/residents and community groups addressing inequities. (It’s like we read your mind – see our upcoming social determinants of health webinars, below!). Respondents also provided rich comments and suggestions, which we are considering. Thank you to those who responded, and for those who expressed interest in helping with the FMEC’s DEI work, watch for emails from us soon.

Promoting family medicine at AMSA
The FMEC exhibited at AMSACon 2022, on April 7-9, 2022, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA. In addition to promoting our 2022 Annual Meeting to medical students, we answered questions for undergraduates and medical students about going into family medicine and primary care. Aligned with our 2022 Annual Meeting theme, Unleashing our Family Medicine Superpowers, we gave visitors to our booth superhero names and superpowers, like “fighting inequity” and “reducing the cost of care.” Thanks to all the students and others who visited our booth! FMEC Webinars on Social Determinants of Health | |

Join the FMEC in May for webinars on food insecurity, fitness and the digital divide!
Even in communities where quality health care is easily accessible, the majority of health inequity and inequality can be ascribed to other influences, such as environment, social and economic factors, and learned behaviors. Medical education and residency programs need to focus on the roles that social determinants of health (SDH) play in wellness, not only to keep families healthy but to meet training requirements. Family physicians are not alone in striving toward health equity – nationally and in every community, diverse groups of advocates and non-medical providers are working to address critical issues such as housing, employment, food insecurity, physical activity, and more. Understanding the national perspective and how different systems are organized and responding at the community level will help family physicians better engage with partners, no matter where they train or practice.
This webinar series has engaged national experts to share how they are working to reduce inequities, in tandem with and outside of health care systems, as well as family physicians who will share examples from their training programs and health systems. Participants will learn challenges from the advocate’s expert perspective; hear about emerging research and policy priorities; gain strategies for making community connections; and bring new ideas back to their medical and residency education programs.

Join the FMEC to support Family Medicine
Individuals can join the FMEC to support our mission to promote family medicine and to get discounts and access to a range of services and resources. Residents and fellows can join for only $30. To help the FMEC develop new programming and better support family medicine, the FMEC’s individual dues rates for others (post-training physicians, faculty, administrators, and other healthcare providers – anyone can join!) will go up on April 1, 2022, from $50 to $75. If your institution is an FMEC partner at the Silver Level or above, you may receive a complimentary FMEC individual membership. Become an ALSO Instructor
At the 2022 Annual Meeting, the FMEC will once again offer an Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Instructor Course. It’s time to think now about who in your residency program needs to be trained as an instructor, and block off Thursday, September 15, 2022 in their calendar. Any clinician providing obstetrical care who has already obtained their ALSO Provider status is eligible to become an approved ALSO Approved Instructor. This includes physicians as well as residents, registered nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, paramedics, and physician assistants. Watch for more information when the FMEC 2022 Annual Meeting registration opens.
Nominate a Resident for the Resident Teacher Award
The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Resident Teacher Award recognizes teaching contributions by residents. Each family medicine residency program can give this award annually to the resident who best demonstrates interest in and a commitment to family medicine education. Thank you to our 2022 Annual Meeting Planning Committee!
Since February, the FMEC’s 50-person 2022 Annual Meeting Planning Committee has been hard at work reviewing nearly 300 submissions for the 2022 Annual Meeting. This month, the Planning Committee Coordinators, led by the chairperson Chrissy Alexander-Rager, MD of MetroHealth, is taking their reviews and assembling an exciting scientific program! Presenters will be notified of acceptance in early May 2022 and the schedule for sessions will be released by June 2022. The FMEC thanks all the volunteers and particularly the Coordinators, including Dr. Alexander and her colleagues Bode Adebombe, MD, MetroHealth; Dennis Gingrich, MD, Penn State University (ret.); Heather Paladine, MD, Columbia/NY Presbyterian; Rajesh Rajesh, MD, MetroHealth; and Martha Seagrave, PA, University of Vermont College of Medicine. Integrative Health case studies released
The Samueli Foundation and the FMEC have released four case studies from their joint Integrative Health Learning Community (IHLC), capturing challenges and successes. Across the case studies, providers engaged in the ILHC noted the value of participating in a collaborative where they were inspired, educated and challenged by colleagues at other practice sites. They cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a barrier to keeping up with their ILHC work and making practice improvements. For some, however, COVID-19 challenges showed the value of IH. Group visits helped combat loneliness exacerbated by the pandemic, and many IH strategies were useful in helping patients recover from ongoing or long COVID symptoms. The case study reports include an overview of whole-person care and IH, evidence supporting whole-person care, and information on quality improvement methodology. Get CME through the FMEC Geropalliative Care Series
The FMEC’s Geropalliative Care Series, an online CME course, is approved for 6.0 AAFP Prescribed Credits through February 1, 2023. The course focuses on patient-centered care of frail older adults in their last 2 to 5 years of life. The series will cover what is geropalliative care, frailty, delirium (understanding the importance and prevention), evidence-based medical prognostication, and the potential harms caused by continuing traditional care. The course is only $120 for FMEC members (only $50 for resident members), and you can view it at your leisure through February of 2023. Visit Geropalliative Care Series and register now.

Primary Care Collaborative launches new campaign
In April 2022, the Primary Care Collaborative launched Better Health – Now. The campaign’s supporters believe the U.S. needs strong primary care in every community so all Americans have better access to health. Better Health – Now presents a way to make this vision a reality.
