A MONTHLY PUBLICATION September 2022 | Issue 9

A WORD FROM OUR CEO

Welcome to the AMSGazette’s ninth issue – we’re glad you’re here!

Can you believe summer’s over? It seems like just yesterday we were firing up the grill to celebrate Independence Day and grabbing our sunscreen and swimming essentials to head to the beach. In just one week, summer ends and fall begins, and in a little over two weeks the Federal Government Fiscal Year ends and a new one begins. And in just three months we begin a brand-new year – I’m already thinking about goals for next year and what I’d like to accomplish.

Speaking of seasons, cycles, and years coming to an end, in this month’s issue we share a few summer photos submitted by our employees. We highlight our AMSG team who supports the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Defense Health Agency (DHA) and who worked overtime in Q4 to save the DHA $199.6 million. We also talk to Barb Palmer, a seasoned Change Management Specialist, who explains why we need change management and why it’s important when transitioning into new processes and procedures. Our very own AMSG employee and award-winning country singer Patsy Hockaday shares a few words of wisdom that will surely inspire you. And finally, we focus in on a few non-profit organizations who are changing the world one school and one book at a time.

We hope you enjoy this month’s issue. We thank you for taking the time to read up on AMSG, and as always, we welcome your input. Feel free to email us at amessenger@amsgcorp.net with ideas, news, or even just to say hello; and share our newsletter with colleagues you think might want to learn about what is happening at AMSG and in the government contracting industry right now.

Have a wonderful month and here’s to a new season!

Warm Regards,

Jim O'Farrell

AMSG in Conversation with Change Management Practitioner Barbara Palmer:

On Organizational Change Management, What It Is & Why It’s Important

Written by: Barbara Palmer (pictured) with Introduction by Juania Owens

“Organizational change management (OCM) is a discipline that enables organizations and individuals to become more resilient and effective in times of disruptive change and transition, as well as more consistent in their ability to build and sustain productive work environments”, says Barb Palmer, Change Management Specialist.

Palmer is one of eight AMSG employees supporting the Employee Education Services organization, now merging with another internal department under the leadership of a new Chief Learning Officer, within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA). She joined the VHA team to expand and implement the communications and change management activities that will underpin and accelerate acceptance, adoption, and goal realization.

Each year, the Federal Government does a “sweep” of its financial accounts by taking back any uncommitted funds. However, before any uncommitted funds are “swept”, the Financial Operations Directorate (FOD) gives the Agency a hard cut-off deadline. Customers are then given the opportunity to execute any uncommitted funds in their respective portfolios before it is taken away – “swept” – in accordance with the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Financial Policies and Congressional mandated policies.

Since unspent dollars are taken away from Agencies and not given back the following Fiscal Year, the AMSG team went above and beyond to support the PEO Medical Systems in processing and funding nearly one-hundred actions and about twenty-five Government Purchase Card (GPC) actions.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

AMSG’s Very Own Country Singer, Patsy Hockaday, Shares Her Passion for Singing and A Few Inspirational Words of Wisdom

Written by: Patsy Hockaday (pictured) with Introduction by Juania Owens

Patsy Hockaday is a rolling stone. Her energy is infectious and her outlook on life is truly inspiring. Having been with Advanced Management Strategies Group (AMSG) just a year after its founding, Patsy has worn many hats. She started as an Office Manager when AMSG opened its corporate headquarter doors in Dumfries, Virginia, and eventually took on other responsibilities with HR, accounts payable, tech editing, and then becoming AMSG’s Facility Security Officer  (FSO). In June of 2019 she transitioned to part-time status, and turned over some of those hats to others.

She never forgets an employee’s birthday, she’s one of a few members on our Employee Engagement Team, and during her spare time, she sings and heads up her award-winning band, Patsy and the Country Classics, performing country, blues, and rock and roll.
