Miss Lassen Scholarship Pageant is Looking for Talented Contestants

The Lassen County Fair and the Miss Lassen County Scholarship Pageant are searching for talented Lassen County residents between the ages of 17 and 22 to participate in the annual scholarship program.

The entrants will compete in a series of activities climaxing with the July 20th pageant in the grandstands at the 2022 Lassen County Fair.

The pageant is open to all residents of the county and Director Shelley Bennett says she would love to have participation from rural areas like Westwood and Herlong.

The Miss Lassen County Scholarship Competition’s mission is to assist young women in reaching their goals through coaching in public speaking, developing their talents, and providing community service opportunities.

The competition is based on the concept of becoming the best ‘You’ possible.

A typical summer for contestants is filled with weekly seminars, dance rehearsals and community activities, as well as lots of fun. Every contestant benefits from the skill development and collaboration provided by the scholarship program.

You can click here to download a registration form, and click here to download official rules and information. Applications are due at the fair office on Russell Avenue by June 3rd.

For more information call Pageant Director Shelley Bennett at 1.530.249.3830.

35th Annual Children’s Fair to be
Held May 7th at the Fairgrounds
For nearly fourty years now the Lassen County Office of Education has presented children of Lassen County with a special day all their own, a low-cost and family-friendly event held each May at the fairgrounds.

It’s a favorite event among local families, a true sign of Susanville spring and every year it seems as if more children visit the fair, more groups and organizations participate and parents who visited the fair as children return to treat their own children to the experience.
In 2019, according to Children’s Fair Coordinator James Hall, the fair attracted more than 10,000 people of all ages who enjoyed nifty games, live entertainment, youth activities and low-cost food.

Hall explains that the purpose of the fair is, “to provide an opportunity for families to spend a pleasant day together that will hopefully reduce tobacco, substance, and child abuse within Lassen County.”

Returning attractions include emergency vehicle displays, educational booths, magic shows and inflatable playgrounds.

“The Children’s Fair is intended to be a benefit to the community and not a profit-making opportunity,” explains Hall.

Admission is free and the Children’s Fair is open on Saturday, May 7th, from 10:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. at the Lassen County Fairgrounds.

Surveillance video of the suspect robbing the Wayside Gas Station
Sheriff’s Office Seeking Public’s Help Identifying Standish Robbery Suspect
Investigators from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office are asking the public to help them identify a suspect wanted in connection with a late evening armed robbery at the Wayside Gas Station in Standish.

According to details from the LCSO, deputies were dispatched to the gas station shortly after 10:00 Thursday, arriving to find two employees who said that a man had held them both at gunpoint and demanded they open the cash register.
“The subject stole several hundred dollars from the register and fled,” explains LCSO Lieutenant David Woginrich. “Deputies searched the building and the surrounding area but were unable to locate the subject.”

The gas station employees were only able to describe the subject as male, standing over six feet tall and wearing all black with a gray face mask.

Deputies retrieved video footage from the store’s surveillance cameras and were able to capture several still photographs of the subject.

If you recognize the man, or if you have any information regarding this incident, you are urged to contact the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office at 1.530.257.6121.

Susanville Votes for Annexation
Big Territory Added to City
March 28, 1947

By a margin of more than two to one, residents of five Susanville additions voted themselves into the city in a special election here Tuesday.

The move increased Susanville’s population from slightly more than 1,500 to an estimated 7,500 and swelled the city’s area by more than 200 percent.

Of the 626 ballots cast, 435 were in favor of the unification and 191 were opposed. Only residents of the five affected additions were allowed to vote. The ballot was less than 50 percent of the registration list of 1,400.

Additions now within the city limits as a result of the election are East Milwood, Arnold, Richmond and Fruit Growers hill.

Main Street, the principal thoroughfare, now runs for more than a mile in the city limits. It previously ran only a few blocks within the official boundaries of the town.

The lumber mill section, which includes its own residences, was not included in the annexation move.

Among other things, the unification is expected to make the administration of schools here easier, with all elementary schools now within the city limits. Two of the largest previously were beyond the boundaries of the town.

The special election was called by the city council after petitions requesting it had been filed with the city clerk and received no protest.
