Thankful Arnold House Museum and Haddam Shad Museum

April 21, 2023

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who attended the April 16th walk at Higganum Cove. A big shout out to the Higganum Cove Advisory Committee members, Ed Schwing, Sue DeCarli, Tim Teran, Peter Baird, Tim McCane, Dante Ursini, and Dorothy Gillespie for all their hard work and assistance with making the afternoon a tremendous success. A HUGE thank you to Steve Gephard, retired DEEP biologist, whose vast knowledge of the area was informative, enlightening, and entertaining.

If you have not had a chance to visit, do so, and enjoy the natural beauty of the cove, falls and CT River. If you close your eyes, you can still hear the cotton mill looms humming and the mill girls gossiping.

Connecticut Gardens

The Thankful Arnold House Museum is thrilled to be included in the new publication Connecticut Gardens by Caryn B. Davis. Connecticut Gardens takes readers on a visual tour of some of the state's most breathtaking historic, public, and private gardens.

From simple cottage gardens to stunning botanical achievements to sumptuous formal landscapes, this book introduces readers to the glorious gardens created by passionate amateurs, professional designers, and notable luminaries such as Frederick Law Olmstead, Gertrude Jekyll, and Beatrix Ferrand.

With lush photography and entertaining text, Connecticut Gardens is a delight to the senses and serves as a useful guide for discovering new gardens to behold.

Children’s Summer Program at the Haddam Historical Society, June 19-23, 2023

The Haddam Historical Society will hold its popular summer program, “A Week in the Life of an Early American Child,” from Monday, June 19 – Friday, June 23, 2023, from 9 am to noon each day. The program is offered for girls and boys ages 8 – 12.

Students will travel back in time to the year 1830 and spend the week with Mrs. Thankful Arnold and her family. All activities take place at the Thankful Arnold House Museum in Haddam, and they include caring for farm animals, crafting with wool, making butter, baking, playing with colonial toys and games, and even dancing! The fee is $139 for the five days with all materials and snacks included. Some scholarship funding is available.

For more information and registration, go to www.haddamhistory.org. For questions regarding the program or scholarship information, contact Sarah Neal, Education Coordinator, The Haddam Historical Society, at education@haddamhistory.org or call 860 345-2400. All students must be pre-registered as space is limited.

Shad Museum Update

The Shad Museum is on the move. In the next few weeks, the Haddam Shad Museum will be relocated to its new location at 272 Saybrook Road.

A number of generous and hard-working volunteers are overseeing this substantial and vital project under the direction of Lenny Kochanowski and Jack Calhoun. Both men have been long- time volunteers and leaders at the Shad Museum and assisted Dr. Joe Zaientz operate the museum for many years. We would like to thank Dale DeCarli, Chuck Cook, Vinnie Madore, Tom Berchulski, Gilbert Madore, Rick Todzia, and Dave Lougee for all their assistance thus far.

272 Saybrook Road is an ideal location to relocate this important Haddam/Higganum landmark which is an integral part of the community’s heritage and identity. In a new location that is both visible and easy to access, the museum will attract a larger audience and benefit the region at large. Although the museum will not be open during the 2023 Shad Season, we hope to have some special events this year once the exhibits are re-installed.

Most of the labor is being donated by volunteers, however we do have some material costs and if you are interested in making a dedicated donation to the Shad Museum, please mail to the Haddam Historical Society, P.O. Box 97, Haddam, CT 06438 or make a donation online at www.haddamhistory.org.
