Dear Aoki Community,

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 tragedy which took many lives and profoundly shook the nation. We continue to honor the victims and surviving family members and commend the state and federal healthcare and compensation programs available for support.

Among the casualties of 9/11 were also Muslim individuals of Arab and South Asian descent. Two decades later, we must continue to reflect on how 9/11 has impacted their lives. A ‘War on Terror’ waged in the Middle East, the detention of many in Guantanamo Bay, anti-Muslim national and international surveillance policies, and stereotype fueled hate crimes have endangered and alienated our Muslim neighbors across the world.

May we take this opportunity to embrace our ongoing responsibility to Afghanistan and its nationals seeking refuge in the United States, as well as our personal role in combating Islamophobia in solidarity with our Arab and Muslim community members.

In Solidarity,

Resources to Aid Our Growth as Allies

We Rallied for the CA Mandela Act!

On Thursday, September 7th, Giselle represented the Aoki Center to support the community's call for the Senate to pass AB 280 - the CA Mandela Act - a comprehensive bill to reform the practice of solitary confinement.

Assembly member Chris Holden, who introduced the bill, spoke at the rally while a group of solitary confinement survivors stood behind him. Survivors also shared their stories, some of whom spent between 13 and 20 years in solitary expressed that they continue to feel the traumatic effects of prolonged torture.

Solitary is a racial justice, disability, mental health, immigration, and human rights issue! We hope this can be the start to ending solitary confinement all together.

Listen. Across America, 68 percent of incarcerated people with a medical condition go without care in local jails. Put simply, incarcerated people are often denied life sustaining and life-saving health care treatment. To make matters worse, carceral facilities are increasingly used as a response to “treat” those with mental and physical illnesses. But, in reality, they are doing the opposite.
