Community Update

July 9, 2024

Message from the Mayor

Yesterday, I announced my proposal for a "One-tenth of 1 percent for Community Safety" sales tax. This proposal aims to make key safety investments that the Spokane community has identified as top priorities. If passed, funding from this sales tax would go toward replacing outdated Spokane Fire Department response vehicles and relaunching the Spokane Police Department's Neighborhood Resource Officer program. This proposal is being put forward as the City makes significant expenditure cuts to ensure an overall balanced budget.  Click here to learn more.

Mayor Brown Around Town!

Safe Streets infrastructure

Mayor Lisa Brown has signed an executive order to prioritize pedestrian and bicycle safety as part of the Safe Streets infrastructure in the City of Spokane. This emphasizes the City's commitment to improving traffic safety for people of all ages, including pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and public transit users.

Additionally, Mayor Brown has approved an ordinance to establish a new transportation commission. The commission's role is to review, analyze, and recommend policies and projects aimed at achieving the City's objective of reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Carts to the Curb Before 6 a.m.

City of Spokane residents are asked to have their garbage, recycling, and yard waste carts ready at the curb by 6 a.m. on their designated collection day. The early start time allows for flexibility when routes need to begin earlier because of changing weather conditions like extreme heat. For more information visit our website.

Opioid Emergency Declaration Update

Mayor Lisa Brown declared an opioid emergency on June 4. Here is the latest update:

  • i2 Strategies, a statewide consultant for encampment resolution, created a list of individuals in the Division/Browne corridor in need of housing and other services. About 70 people are on the list.
  • Revive Counseling is operating a temporary transitional program using the Canon facility. They have cleaned and repaired the facility and started to move people in. Revive will be installing a fence to help limit neighborhood impacts.
  • Car 50, a partnership between the Spokane Fire Department and Spokane Treatment and Recovery Services, is driving routes downtown to transport people in need to recovery services. Ten people have been referred to treatment through this service.
  • Spokane Fire Department has enrolled in ODMap to help with our overdose tracking.

Survey Available on Housing, Services Fund Prioritization

The City receives funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) entitlement grant programs that serve as the framework for a community-wide dialogue to identify housing and community development. HUD’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME), and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) programs supported through these funds increase and preserve affordable rental and homeowner housing, improve public facilities, and support public and community services such as food banks and health care services. The City needs your help to identify how best to spend these funds in our community by completing the needs survey.
