The 17th Annual Santos Family Car Show!

The place to be on Labor Day weekend is the Santos Family Car Show in Alviso. The 17th annual event was a huge success! This fantastic event draws hundreds of classic cars from all over the state. It’s fun for the whole family and all proceeds support the Santa Visits Alviso Foundation.

Richard Santos and other members of the Santa Visits Alviso Foundation address Car Show attendees.

Councilmember Cohen and San José Mayor Matt Mahan present the Santos Family with a commendation recognizing their efforts on behalf of the Alviso Community.

Take a look at just a few of the over 600 classic cars on display this year!

Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Intersections on Greengate at Cabrillo and Havenwood have been made safer for pedestrians and cyclists getting to and from Cherrywood School, with crosswalk improvements recently completed by San José DOT. My office continues to work toward improving the safety of pedestrians near schools and across District 4.

First Annual Lowrider Day Celebration

In celebration of the first anniversary of the lifting of San Jose's decades long Cruising Ban, hundreds of lowrider and classic cars gathered on the plaza and along E. Santa Clara Street downtown. Chief Mata and many members of the San Jose Police Department were on hand to enjoy the festivities.

SJPD produced this fantastic video documenting the event!

Market at City Hall Every Tuesday

A new tradition is born at City Hall! Every Tuesday a vibrant marketplace springs up on the Plaza at San Jose City Hall! With food, rarities, clothing, and more from local vendors, Plaza Azul brings life and excitement to Downtown.

BART Maintenance Projects

BART will soon perform preventative maintenance work in areas all over San José to protect the system from fallen trees.

Approximately 35 hazardous trees, between the Union City and Fremont BART stations, have been identified for pruning or removal. Work is scheduled now so trees with the greatest potential to impact BART operations are removed well ahead of winter storms. Last year, fallen trees derailed two trains and delayed train service on multiple occasions.

This important safety work will take place on three non-consecutive weekends in August and September. During these weekends, train service between the Union City and Fremont BART Stations will be replaced by a free bus shuttle, which could result in delays of up to 30 minutes. The construction weekends are:

·        August 26 – 27

·        September 9 – 10

·        September 23 – 24

In addition to tree pruning and removal, BART will perform track improvements and station maintenance. Tree work will take place from 7am – 7pm and include the use of chainsaws and woodchippers. Other construction activities will require lights and equipment with backing alarms for worker safety.

Closing 87 For Construction

Caltrans is scheduled to close Northbound and Southbound SR-87 on two weekends between late September 2023 and mid-October 2023. During the 56-hour highway closures, Caltrans will perform major pavement repair work on northbound and southbound SR-87

in Santa Clara County. One traffic direction on SR-87 will be worked on at a time. Detours will be in effect. All work is weather and conditions dependent.

WHY THE WORK IS NEEDED?

The purpose of the project is to improve ride quality, enhance safety,

and extend the service life of the pavement. These full weekend

closures are necessary for worker and public safety during the work.

Caltrans will perform major pavement rehabilitation on the two center

tra c lanes in both the northbound and southbound directions of

SR-87. The roadway has become worn and in need of major repairs

due to decades of high traffic use.

CLOSURE WILL START FRIDAYS AFTER 9 P.M. AND CONCLUDE

ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAYS NO LATER THAN 5 A.M.

These closures will allow for concrete pavement in tra c lanes to be

replaced. These closures will shorten the duration of the project by

providing improved safety and better ride quality to the public. These

series of weekend SR-87 closures will reduce the number of overnight

lane closures needed to complete this work by 2024 instead of

completing in late 2025.

(BETWEEN I-280 AND SR-85, SAN JOSE CA.)

Who's making a big difference in our community? A great teacher, business owner, a police officer who goes beyond the call of duty. Maybe there's someone spending their free time organizing creek clean-ups or blanket drives for the unhoused... If you've got someone special in your neighborhood, let us know by nominating them to be a District Hero!
