Summer is here, and so are all the delicious treats that come with the heat! From ice cream to fresh fruit, there’s no shortage of yummy snacks. While you’re enjoying these summer snacks, it's important to keep your dental health in mind. We’ve put together some easy tips to help you enjoy your favorite summer treats without compromising your bright smile.

Choose healthier snacks

When craving something sweet, try reaching for fresh fruits instead of candy or sugary snacks. Fruits like apples, strawberries and watermelon are not only delicious, but are packed with vitamins that are good for your teeth. Plus, the natural sugars in fruits are less harmful to your tooth enamel, when compared to the added sugars in many processed snacks.

Limit sugary drinks

While it might be tempting to reach for a soda or a sugary sports drink to stay hydrated, these beverages may harm your teeth. They often contain high amounts of sugar and acids that can erode your tooth enamel. Instead, opt for water, milk or unsweetened tea. If you do have a sugary drink, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth and rinse your mouth with water afterward.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is crucial, especially during the hot summer months. Water helps wash away food particles and sugars that can stick to your teeth and cause cavities. Carry a water bottle with you and make it a habit to rinse your mouth with water after enjoying sweet treats.

Say cheese

Cheese lovers, rejoice! Cheese is a great snack for your teeth because it’s high in calcium and helps neutralize acids in your mouth. Eating a piece of cheese after a meal can help protect your enamel and keep your teeth strong. Plus, it’s a tasty way to balance out summer sweets.

Maintain a dental routine

Even though summer can be busy with fun activities, sticking to your dental care routine is important. Brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes and floss daily to remove plaque and keep your gums healthy. Regular dental check-ups are also crucial, so don’t skip your appointments.

Enjoy all the delicious treats summer offers while keeping your smile bright and healthy. Remember, a little care goes a long way in maintaining dental health.
