Council District 9 News

June 20, 2022

Hello Lydia,

Some of my favorite childhood memories are from my time in the pool with my dad and siblings. One of the games we’d play consisted of us taking turns holding onto his back as he’d mimic a bucking bull. We’d also ride him around as he’d casually drift through the water. Whether the ride was wild or serene didn’t matter, it was always so.much.fun.

Looking back, those aquatic rides also represented the way my dad embraced carrying the responsibility of being a family man. My dad worked incredibly hard and could’ve easily chosen to spend those hours he spent with us in the pool instead resting and recovering from his long hours. Time and again, he chose us. He chose us instead of resting, he chose us instead of his career, and he still chooses us when we need him but health and life would make for easy and well-warranted reasons to not be there. I’m so damn grateful for all of it.

Happy Father’s Day, to my dad and all of the father figures in our community.

With gratitude,

Sean

Commemorating Juneteenth

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African American holiday and on June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

Celebrate Juneteenth by taking action to progress policies that provide Black Americans equitable opportunity at sdd9.info/naacp19:

  • Criminal Justice Reform - Join the NAACP to advocate for smarter, results-based criminal justice policies, and to call on Congress to implement measures to de-incarcerate.
  • Advocate for An Inclusive Economy - There is a need for fair working conditions, economic security, and healthy economic conditions to help Black families grow in their communities.
  • Equitable Healthcare - Inequities within the U.S. health care system impact people of color disproportionately and lead to unequal access to services and poorer health outcomes, especially for Black Americans.
  • Pass The Equality Act - This bill would provide explicit non-discrimination protections for all LGBTQ+ people across key areas of life including employment, housing, public services, and federally funded programs.

Council District 9 Updates

City Budget Approved for Fiscal Year 2023

Each dollar that the City of San Diego spends is an investment in our future. Last week, the City officially approved the budget for Fiscal Year 2023, which runs from July 2022 until June 2023. Hundreds of District 9 residents reached out to our office these past few months to offer their voice and perspective on how the City should invest in our communities. Thank you to everyone that contacted our office, attended a forum, spoke during public comment, or submitted a written comment.

You need and deserve a budget that addresses the City’s immediate needs while also setting the it up for success in the future. I thank Mayor Gloria and my City Council colleagues for striking that balance.

From our investment in homelessness response and prevention to increased funding for infrastructure, to the investment in City workers who do the work we depend on, I am proud of the budget we've unanimously approved, and can't wait to see our communities receive the improved services and quality of life that should follow.

Community Projects, Programs, & Services (CPPS) Funding Program

The City’s Community Projects, Programs, and Services (CPPS) Funding Program is opening its application cycle for the new fiscal year starting on July 1st. CPPS funding is awarded to non-profit organizations and public agencies for one-time community, social, environmental, cultural, and recreational needs that serve a lawful public purpose. Funds awarded to organizations and agencies are paid on a reimbursement basis and are at the discretion of each Council Office.

The application will be open from July 1- July 31, 2022. Applicants must complete and submit the application by July 31, 2022.

Interested in learning more? The Council Administration team is hosting a workshop on Tuesday, June 28th, 6-7pm, at the Mission Valley Library in the Community Room at the 2123 Fenton Pkwy, San Diego, CA 92108. There is no RSVP link for the workshop -- any walk-in guests will be accepted.

Prepare and Protect Your Home from Brushfires

As the summer days get warmer and the landscape becomes drier, it’s important to prepare for the possibility of fire. Those who live near canyons can clear debris, flammable materials, and create defensible space around their homes to make it easier for firefighters to keep fire away from your home.

There are many proactive steps you can take to protect yourself and personal property.

Take a look at this guide from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department which provides great tips in English and Spanish.

Joint Cleanup with District 4

This week, we are joining forces with the Council District 4 Office for a Joint Cleanup event on Saturday June 25th from 9:00-11:00am at the Willie Henderson Complex Sports Park parking lot, at 1035 South 45th Street, San Diego CA 92113. You’ll be able to dispose of items like mattress, electronics, tires, appliances, and plenty of room for other everyday items you want to get rid of.

Residents who are attending the cleanup event will not have access to the adjacent streets so we’re asking those participating to please use the South 43rd Street and Z Street entrance. This will facilitate easier traffic flow, make this event less intrusive to other residents in the area, and make unloading of vehicles more efficient. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Please contact our office if you want to volunteer for this (and future events) or if you have any questions.
