Message from the President
Dear Members,
The 2022 IISE Annual Conference is just around the corner, and I am looking forward to not only the plethora of excellent speakers and presentations, but also getting to network in person and enjoy being together once again. The Construction Engineering and Management Division board members have been tirelessly working over the past few months preparing for our division’s contributions to the conference. With special sessions, our town hall, and several paper presentations, this year’s division will be rich with new research and contributions to the IISE Construction body of knowledge. The board also has a strong commitment to our students and strives to encourage and foster professional growth for new-to-the-workforce, young professionals through the many different resources and opportunities given through IISE. One way the division interacts with students is through our student paper competition. Each year, our division solicits student papers for which a winner is selected and receives a $500 award to attend the Annual Conference (either virtually or in-person) to present their paper during our Town Hall meeting. This competition gives students the opportunity to gain experience with presenting at a professional conference and network with other professionals in their field of study. Entries are open to undergraduate and graduate students and should demonstrate or describe the application of construction engineering and management techniques. Please consider encouraging any students that may have an applicable topic to submit a paper. The deadline for final papers has been extended to April 29, and papers should be submitted via email to Dr. Henry Lester at hlester@gmx.com. More information can be found on as well as on our IISE Connect page and IISE Construction Twitter account.
Thank you to our board members, the IISE staff, and the Annual Conference Track Chairs and Volunteers for the work and planning they do to make the 2022 Annual Conference a success! We look forward to seeing everyone in Seattle! As always, please feel free to reach out to me at ewall@cavse.msstate.edu, or any of the other board members, if you wish to get involved.
Thanks,
Emily Wall, PhD, PE
President, Construction and Engineering Management Division

Board Member Highlight
Christina Rinaudo is an Operations Research Analyst in the Institute for Systems Engineering Research (ISER) at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. She currently serves as a member of the IISE Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) Division, and she has previously served as President of the CEM Division. Before joining the ISER, Mrs. Rinaudo led facility and process engineering projects in support of aircraft depot maintenance. In the ISER, she develops tools, software, and systems that support diverse capabilities such as asset replacement analysis, cost analysis in support of military acquisition decision-making, and virtual reality-enabled maintenance using infrastructure models.
Mrs. Rinaudo enjoys serving as a member of the IISE CEM Division because of the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the individuals with whom she is able to interact. This year, Mrs. Rinaudo also serves as the primary track chair for the CEM Track of the 2022 IISE Annual Conference & Expo. She encourages you to attend as many sessions as you can during the Annual Conference & Expo to improve your own knowledge of the CEM field, meet fellow colleagues interested in this field, and learn about new, state-of-the-art capabilities.

Message from the Editor
Hello, everybody!
A recent article from The Wall Street Journal discusses how construction engineers are designing wooden skyscrapers rather than more traditional concrete and steel structures. This article discusses how using so-called mass timber can result in buildings with similar structural properties to those constructed with concrete and steel, while potentially resulting in a decreased carbon footprint. In areas with sustainable local timber sources, using wood for building design could also result in lower shipping costs and less time needed to acquire building supplies. I look forward to seeing how the construction industry will continue to innovate in the coming years, to result in reductions in energy requirements and carbon footprints for new projects.
The 2022 IISE Annual Conference and Expo is scheduled for May 21-24, 2022. Please make sure to register at the advanced rate by May 14, 2022, for extra savings. We look forward to seeing your presentations in the Construction Engineering and Management Track, and finding out how you are applying construction engineering and management principles in your own occupation or coursework.
The Division Board is always looking for new members to sign up and provide great insights – whether from industry, academia, government, or another sector. Please contact us to find out more about getting involved with the Division today!
Respectfully,
William Leonard
