A Mysterious Chart Fragment
By comparing this fragment of a nautical chart to one in the Leventhal collection at the Boston Public Library, we have determined this is part of Captain Holland's "A new and correct chart of the coast of New England and New York with the adjacent parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick from Cape Sable to the entrance of Hudsons or North River" published by Laurie and Whittle. There are several examples from 1794 at notable collections, however this example is slightly later, as it references "The Light[house] of Cape Cod"; the first lighthouse on Cape Cod was built by the order of George Washington in 1797. There are hand-colored markings for other lighthouses on the Cape, but only the first Cape lighthouse has the printed symbol. Some interesting details include "Crab Bank" along the east of Cape Cod, interesting spellings of some locations (Cohasset is Konohasset and Nauset is Nursset), and seven partial recognition profiles on the left side. The barrier beaches of Chatham are shown almost like shoals and there is a note that says "Old Entrance 30 Years ago." We cannot find any other example of this version of this chart, either for sale or in any collection.

The Adirondack Picture Map
This stunning map of the Adirondacks with Lake Champlain and Lake George was made by E.A. Knight in 1920 and copyrighted in 1921 by A.S. Knight. Printed at a time when automobiles (and automobile roads) were just gaining prominence, this map indicates macadam (paved) roads in thick red lines; thin red lines are graded roads and white lines are dirt roads.

1921 - The Adirondack Picture Map - Antique Pictorial Map
With a variety of fascinating topics, we hope to have an antique print for any interest! Recently we have added cows, Connecticut views, an astronomical print, a view of Salt Lake City and one of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.
Note: any "rainbows" or strange wavy patterns in the image of black and white prints are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the engraving- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned. The images on our website may have less moire effect than those condensed for an email.

A 19th Century re-creation of the Southack Map
This map is a copy produced by the US Government in 1890 of a map that was originally produced in 1710 by Cyprian Southack. It is a stunning chart of the coast line from New York City to Boston. It's a bit odd to wrap your head around an antique reproduction, but this map is just that!
