One of my favorite elements of public scholarship is engaging with people who inspire me to think differently. That’s why I’m excited to attend the Engagement Scholarship Consortium’s annual conference this month and showcase several programs with the PSE team and our partners.

Public Engagement Champion
An expert in air pollution and indoor air quality, Richard Corsi has a decades-long history of work in public scholarship. His concept of a low-cost and effective do-it-yourself air cleaner to combat virus-laden aerosol particles, the Corsi-Rosenthal Box, spread worldwide during the pandemic.

Spotlight: Your Public Scholarship Community
Wildfire smoke may carry mold spores that cause fungal infections in humans. Naomi Hauser, an infectious disease specialist and assistant clinical professor at UC Davis Health, built strong connections with community fire departments to measure the spread of spores during wildfires.
Partnering with the California Department of Public Health WIC Division helped UC Davis economists Charlotte Ambrozek and Timothy Beatty better understand not only the economic factors affecting this federal nutrition program, but also the experiences of participants and vendors.
Natalia Deeb-Sossa, associate professor in the Department of Chicana/o Studies, has a passion for advocating for marginalized communities and addressing inequities. She documented the pandemic’s impact on children of farm workers with support from a Public Impact Research Initiative grant.
UC Davis student Mariah Padilla, a community and regional development major, took what she learned in class to help create a tool that aims to enhance a local community’s social and economic health and well-being.
Congratulations to Liza Grandia, community engaged learning faculty fellow and associate professor of Native American studies, on her outstanding teaching award from the College of Letters and Science.
