SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

LENTEN THOUGHTS

In our reading for this Sunday, we are reminded that this is part of the Farewell Discourse that Jesus is giving to his disciples. Preparing them for his coming arrest and death. And yet, he has promised to not leave them out on their own. He will not leave them as orphans. The Helper or The Advocate will be sent to be with them. But for the disciples there is confusion and fear for this coming departure of their friend, teacher, and Messiah. So Jesus words, The Word, bring comfort to these young men by reminding them of the promised one to come. The Spirit of Truth.

Yours In Christ,

Brandon

Prayers for others

Continue to pray for the four major ongoing international crises: the Turkey-Syria earthquake; Sao Paulo, Brazil flooding; the Horn of Africa hunger crisis and the Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis. These emerging crises also need our prayers: fire in Cox’s Bazar refugee camps, Bangladesh; flooding in Malaysia; severe storms across the Southern U.S.; and the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu that suffered two tropical cyclones (Kevin & Judy) and a 6.5 earthquake from March 1-3. Additional prayers for the women of Afghanistan. And especially prayers for our nation and for strength, endurance, faith and courage for all.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Church in the Park on Father's Day 2018.

We look forward to returning there this year!

GREEN SPACE

Bees are indispensable pollinators that support a diverse array of flowering plants worldwide. Now a new analysis of more than 4,000 bees from 60 native species is showing that the more diversity within a bee community, the more resistant bees are to pathogens. University of Michigan researchers examined bees at 14 winter squash farms with managed honeybee colonies. They found that 7 to 49 native bee species also pollinated the squash flowers and that lower virus levels were linked consistently to great species richness.

Researchers tested the native species along with the honeybees for the presence of three currently untreatable viruses that cause high losses among honeybee colonies. The viruses spread as bees move from flower to flower, gathering pollen and nectar and pollinating plants in the process. However, it seems that sharing flowers with many different bee species prevents or limits the viruses' ability to spread. This study provides another strong argument for the importance of protecting biodiversity.     (GSN #139)

VIRTUAL CREATION ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

DISCOVER THE TATRA MOUNTAINS (POLAND)

Wonders of Nature (April 2021 | 7:48 min.)

Tatra Mountains, or the Tatras, are the highest range of the Carpathian Mountains and lies along Poland’s border with Slovakia.

The Tatra Mountains rise to the greatest elevation in the entire northern half of Europe, with the 2655-meters Gerlachovsky Stit in Slovakia and the 2499-meters Rysy peak in Poland. The range is 53 km long and takes up 785 square km.

Three distinct parts make up the Tatra Mountains – the High Tatras, the Western Tatras, and the Bielskie Tatras. The High Tatras, with their dramatic vistas, steep peaks, sharp rocks, deep glens, and crystal lakes are the most attractive. At the same time the Western Tatras lower slopes clad in pine forests offer wider horizons and diverse wildlife.

Vanishing Grace: Whatever Happened to the Good News?

By Philip Yancey

(227/YAN)

“Why does the church stir up such negative feelings?” Philip Yancey has been asking this all his life as a journalist. His perennial question is more relevant now than ever: research shows that favorable opinions of Christianity have plummeted drastically—and opinions of Evangelicals have taken even deeper dives.

Yet while opinions about Christianity are dropping, interest in spirituality is rising. Why the disconnect? Why are so many asking, “What’s so good about the Good News?”

In Vanishing Grace, Yancey shows the desperate need our world has for grace, and how Christians can truly make the gospel good news again. In this video-based small group Bible study, participants will explore what kind of news is good to a culture that thinks it has rejected the Christian version. Wading deep into the transformative power of grace, they will hear illuminating stories of how faith can be expressed in ways that disarm even the most cynical.
