Dear Friends,
Another senseless devastating shooting - our hearts ache and mourn with the communities of Uvalde and Buffalo - it may seem hopeless but we know how to take our country back and make our voices heard. Our work is to protect children's health.
We ask you to raise your voices against gun violence now. Please find groups working on gun control below.
Let our legislators know the will of the American people can NOT be dismissed.

On Friday, April 22nd Earth Day, 2022, community members gathered to support Word Up Community Bookshop's Highbridge Park Clean-up. Word Up collective member, Renzo Moyano Condia teamed up with the newly formed Earth Month Youth Coalition and others to "Invest in our Planet". Nineteen people participated, and 18 bags of garbage were filled in just 2 hours. There is more work to be done, and we hope to continue this fruitful collaboration engaging youth. Word Up's Earth Defender Program is committed to making the closest nature trail safe, having organized sharps/biohazard removal several times prior to the Earth Day clean up. The trail can serve as a potential "ecolab" for local school children and the community. In partnership with the Highbridge Park Conservancy Engagement Program and the Natural Areas Conservancy and NYC Parks, Word Up plans on making the "ecolab" a reality.
A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers!

In addition to working on the park clean up, youth from Fresh Youth Initiative, (FYI), galvanized their friends at their school Gregorio Luperon High School to gather and view documentaries on the plastic problem. Under the support of Director of Social Services, Alessandro Guimaraes, LMSW, and Gregorio Luperon High School, and Family Coordinator, Lizzi Sofge the documentary Isla de Plastico,(Spanish) and PBS Plastic Wars were streamed for both in-person and virtual viewing. Thirty-five students participated, including young middle schoolers from MS331's, Leave it Better Program and CCCEH EHJ Advocates. Groups discussed next steps to be taken at the individual and community level. Excited to see more youth initiatives on plastic!

Leave It Better, Director, Briana Black, directing her 7th and 8th graders with CCCEH EHJ Advocate, Intern, Yesibel Pimentel at her side. Spring is here and the youth at MS331 in the Bronx, are preparing the Leave It Better Garden. Throughout the cloudy day three different groups, 48 children in all were engaged in leaving their garden better. In the coming weeks, Youth Coalition members will help plant sunflowers in both the LIB and Gregorio Luperon Gardens.
Ms. Black, LIB Director has been actively partnering with COTC and EHJ Advocates early on. We are excited to continue strengthening our partnership and youth engagement.
