Contribute to the Douglas County Climate Action Plan

The City of Lawrence and all of Douglas County are building a Climate Action Plan to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate and do our part to slow climate change. The action planning team is looking for voices from every corner of the community, including yours! Student Spotlight: Riya Patel

In 2003, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too. KU senior Riya Patel has earned the Bronze Presidential Service Award for completion of 100 service hours in a year! Congratulate Riya

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Computer and Website Support Volunteer League of Women Voters Lawrence- Douglas County is a non-partisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. They are looking for remote volunteers to assist with website maintenance and development! Kansas City Indian Center Youth Culture Camp Campers will have the opportunity to learn about Indigenous/First Nations stories, culture, and Powwow etiquette. Volunteers are needed from June 1-5 to serve as cabin counselors and help camp run smoothly. Kansas City Triathalon Volunteer The Kansas City Sports Commission is looking for eager volunteers who will be assisting in various positions such as aid station, bike course marshall, packet pickup, pre-race & swim support, run course marshall, and transition area & finish line support.  Rent/Utility/Nutrition Assistance Application Counselor Volunteers will work directly with community members to help them in the process of filling out and submitting online applications for housing, rent, utilities, and SNAP (food stamps) financial assistance. In-person meetings with community members will be held at Lawrence Public Library.

Summer Course Opportunity: UNIV 492

This summer, the CSL will be offering an online six-week section of UNIV 492: Special Projects in the Community. The course content of UNIV 492 deepens students' understanding of service work by introducing knowledge and skills needed to carry out effective and ethical volunteer efforts.  Students can select their own service project and enroll in the "Local" section of the course. UNIV 492 counts as a service learning or social awareness course for the Certificate in Service Learning, which satisfies KU Core Goal 5. Learn more about UNIV 492 and email us with any questions!

Complete a Certificate in Service Learning

We invite you to consider earning a Certificate in Service Learning. Obtaining your certificate involves taking classes, engaging in volunteer work, and reflecting on your service learning experiences. Once you have earned the certificate, it is acknowledged on your official academic transcript. There are a number of steps to complete the Certificate in Service Learning, make sure you visit our website to learn more about where you are in the process or where to start if you are just beginning!  If you have questions about your personal progress toward completion of the Certificate in Service Learning, please email our Certificate Coordinator at serve@ku.edu.
