This week Calgary Jewish Federation and Paperny Family JCC proudly hosted our community’s Yom HaZikaron (also in partnership with Temple B’nai Tikvah) ceremony on May 3, and Yom HaAtzmaut celebration on May 5. While the Yom HaZikaron ceremony solemnly commemorated Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror, on Yom HaAtzmaut our community joyfully celebrated Israel’s 74 birthday. With over 150 people in attendance, these two events were made possible by Chairperson Lana Tsalkovich Hewitt with professional support from Karina Szulc and Shula Banchik. A sincere thank you to everyone who attended and made these offerings possible. See photos from the events here.
From May 3 to 5, our community proudly hosted two Shlichim (Israeli Emissaries). During their time here, Netanel (Nati) and Doron connected with students at Halpern Akiva Academy and Calgary Jewish Academy, young adults, seniors, and Paperny Family JCC and Calgary Jewish Federation staff. Highlights of their stay included playing Israeli street games with BBYO teens, hosting members of Hillel Calgary, JAC (Jewish Adult Calgary), and Kesher in an evening of Israeli coffee tasting and culture, and finally, participating in our community's Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut ceremonies. A hearty Todah Rabah to Nati and Doron, and to Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), a partner of Federation, and the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora, who made their visit possible.
Thursday, June 9 marks the 31st anniversary of the Paperny Family JCC Sports Dinner. This year's program features NFL quarterback, Alex Smith. He will share his story of resilience – it is one of the greatest comebacks in football history. This corporate event is the JCC’s largest fundraiser of the year and is one of the biggest fundraising dinners in Calgary. As a not-for-profit organization, the JCC is a community centre that relies on fundraising to provide social, educational, recreational, and cultural programming to individuals and families of all ages, stages, and backgrounds.
