TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
PRACTICE OF FAITH
Do we know yet what the kingdom of God is like? In parable after parable, with increasing urgency, Jesus impels us to understand where the path of faith is leading, and what obstacles we must overcome along our journey. In the parable of the wedding feast, he cautions: once we accept God's invitation into his kingdom (once we become Christians), we still have work to do. Like the underdressed guest, we can still be judged unfit for the banquet. Our limited view may yet get in our way.
- The complacency Jesus warns us about is defeated with deepened faith. The domestic church is where faith is organically grown and nurtured; if you do not already have one, start a family faith tradition such as a weekly Rosary or nightly prayer together.
-
With others or on your own, begin a regular study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn more about your faith.
- The first reading for this Sunday is frequently used at funerals. As November and the observance of the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed comes closer, pray that those who have died may enter God's kingdom.
We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
This Weekend, October 14-15
| |
This weekend, we celebrate World Mission Sunday, heeding Pope Francis's call to keep our "Hearts on fire, feet on the move." On this day, we reflect on our baptismal promise to be disciples and missionaries, sharing the Good News. The collection is for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which directly aids priests, religious, and lay leaders in the Pope's missions, allowing them to minister to and uplift communities in dire need. Let's light up the world with our prayers and generosity. Thank you for your heartfelt contribution!
HIGH SCHOOL ESPERANZA MISSION TREK BAKE SALE

FINAL LISTENING SESSION
This Thursday, October 12 at 7:00pm via Zoom
| |
The proposed list of parish families has been released by the Archdiocese of Seattle.
One thing the staff noted from previous listening sessions was a misunderstanding of what is happening in the proposed grouping – St. John Mary Vianney is not closing as a church or its ministries. The aligning as a family means that the parishioners of the two or three parishes will gather to determine how to use its combined resources – monetary, buildings, and staff. Your involvement in the next two years will determine what each parish group ends up looking like.
We want to hear from you! Our final listening session will be this Thursday, October 12 at 7:00pm via Zoom. Please sign up to attend using the button below OR share your thoughts here by October 14. Please be sure to review the Partners in the Gospel materials available at ArchSeattle.org/Partners before commenting so you are well informed.
The listening session will be structured along the lines of the synodal process – three main questions will be put forth:
- What concerns do you have about the proposed family grouping? What challenges might this grouping pose?
- What hopes do you have regarding the proposed family grouping? What opportunities or possibilities might this grouping offer?
- What additional thoughts and feedback (including proposed changes to the parish family) do I have?
All people present for the listening session will have an opportunity to speak on the questions and all comments will be given to the Archdiocese for their continued discernment. Trained facilitators will lead the sessions. Expect the session to last about an hour and a half.
Please continue to pray for the church in Western Washington as we move through this time of transition.

SJV + WATER ACCESS NOW = A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
$10,183.31
| |
“Some little child in a remote village in Ghana, West Africa, is praying for clean water.” She has walked for an hour or more, each way, sometimes twice a day, to fetch water that is not potable.
SJV, that little girl will have her prayer answered. Your support of the WaterFromWine sale AND the added donations will build a full deep clean water borehole 5 minutes from her family’s hut. It will be clean. She can hold her hands under the gushing water and bring those hands to her mouth and drink. Imagine!
“Lord, when did we see you…. thirsty….and give you drink?”
Water is hope. Water is school. Kom Nyela Nivuli (Water is life)
That which is good is never finished.
Thank you Light on Finn Hill family,
Jan Kline and Steve Zeller

BE THE CHURCH
We need Adults and Youth willing to be Catechism Clubhouse leaders for our kids!
| |
Catechism Clubhouse leaders: Clubhouse challenges are all planned and prepared for you. The weekly challenges are emailed out to group leaders and assistants on Thursdays each week before our Clubhouse meetings - “Clubhouse lesson for the week.” All the supplies are prepared and ready when kids and group leaders arrive. We just ask that clubhouse leaders read over the lesson plan before they arrive for our session. Kids are active and learn through movement and working together to complete challenges.
Catechism club is full of spirit and alive, but we can’t do it without adult help and support. PLEASE, IF YOU FEEL LIKE GOD IS CALLING YOU, RESPOND. IF YOU WANT TO SEE YOUNG PEOPLE IN CHURCH… SHOW THEM THAT THEY MATTER BY SPENDING TIME WITH THEM! Our kids are amazing, and they do have an earnest desire to grow in their faith… let’s wrap a village of people around them and their parents by helping them on their faith journey.
Clubhouse leaders and assistants need to have an openness to children, an ability to guide and refocus the kids on completing their challenge. They should also be able to build relationships with the kids that help the kids feel safe and ready to learn and grow in their faith. Sessions are
- during the 9:00am Sunday Mass for our youngest kids, 3-year-olds - Kindergarten
- Sunday from 10:00-11:00am for our 1st - 5th Graders OR on Monday from 7:00-8:00pm
We do ask that adults complete a criminal background check and complete a class on safe environment. These can be done online. Please let me know if you are interested.
You are the Church… our kids are the Church and Christ is our cornerstone. Let’s keep building this church together!
Please let Laura Stanger know if you want to be the Church that helps support the faith of the Future of our Church!

TRUNK-OR-TREAT
Friday, October 27 from 6:00-7:00pm
| |
What is Trunk-or-Treat? It is a Halloween event that is often church or community sponsored. People gather and park their cars in a large parking lot. They open their trunks, or the backs of their vehicles, and decorate them. Then they pass out candy from their trunks. The event provides a safe family environment for trick-or-treaters!
CAR DECORATORS: Arrive at 5:00pm in the preschool parking lot and decorate your car. Someone will be there to direct you to the correct spaces. Awesome ideas can be found on Pinterest.
SJV PRESCHOOL FAMILIES ONLY: Arrive in costume at 5:00pm for arts & crafts, popcorn, hot cider, and activities in the covered area of the playground.
TRUNK-OR-TREATING: From 6:00-7:00pm (NOT BEFORE). All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you would like to help with this fun event, there are many ways for you to participate:
-
DONATE CANDY: Support this event by simply donating candy in the big brown candy box in the Narthex. PLEASE NO NUTS (Snickers, Reese's, Peanut M&Ms, etc.)
-
CAR DECORATOR AND CANDY GIVER OUTTER: Fill out the registration form, and turn it into the parish office by Wednesday, October 25. Decorate your trunk and pass out candy to our trunk-or-treaters.
-
VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME: Help with security/parking, arts & crafts, popcorn making, or clean up. Please check where you would like to help on the registration form, and turn it into the parish office by Wednesday, October 25.

THE SPIRIT OF THE LITURGY
The first document to emerge from the Second Vatican Council was Sacrosanctum Concilium (1963), the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. Most of us know that the Council allowed for the liturgy to be in the vernacular, and opened the way for laypeople to participate more actively in the Mass, by joining in the dialogues and responses, singing many of the parts of the Mass, and taking on different liturgical ministries. What is less well known is why those changes were made. The renewal of the liturgy after the Council was directed towards the people of God, so that all could participate fully, consciously, and actively, and become "deeply imbued with the spirit of the liturgy."
What is "the spirit of the liturgy"? As we look at the Introductory Rites of the Mass, we can see that the spirit of the liturgy is response to the invitation of God. The spirit of the liturgy is entering into community and walking together with Christ. The spirit of the liturgy is humility and joy, wonder and awe in the presence of God.

Saturday, October 14 at 12:00pm
| |
In 2007, America Needs Fatima started the October Rosary Rally Campaign asking people to pray a rosary for America in a public place at noon on the Saturday closest to October 13th, when Our Lady performed the miracle of the sun. This year that is October 14. There is a group that will be praying the Rosary on the corner of 116th Ave NE and NE 128th St. in Kirkland. Look for the banner of Our Lady of Fatima if you want to join them. Parking is available at the Kingsgate Park & Ride.
