A Word from Doug Adkins

Dear St. Gregory’s Family,

   I have had conversations with many of you, since my ordination, inquiring about my job search.  Most of you know that, while continuing my part-time work at St. Gregory’s, I have been searching for full-time openings in a variety of dioceses, including ours.  I wish to share that I have accepted the position as Director of Congregational Life with the people of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Louisville, KY.  Becky and I flew up there a couple weeks ago and had a wonderful visit. It was important to me that it was not just an opportunity and a move that I felt strongly about, but that Becky did as well.  Once offered the position, it only took us a few days to give our response.  After 23 years in Madison, I am grateful to be returning to Kentucky.  The church is about three miles from the Baptist seminary, where Becky and I met.  We still have several old friends from those days who live in Louisville.  My parents, and much of my extended family, live 80 miles northeast of Louisville. Besides all of those factors, we had an overwhelming affirmation that the parish and its reputation for community engagement – all was a very good fit for us.  



   I will share more personal thoughts about my time at St. Gregory’s and all that it has meant to me; for now, I wanted to share the news, as the church in Louisville will be making the announcement this Sunday.  My last Sunday at St. Gregory’s will be November 12.  I look forward to spending these last five weeks with all of you. As always, I am so grateful to have been part of this unique family of faith.

NEEDED: Two (2) responsible teenagers, or kind adults, to provide dependable, safe, secure, and nurturing care to the children while at our Church, ages 0-5 years in a clean environment. 

REQUIREMENTS:

• Safeguarding God’s Children certification program
• background check
• current with CPR & First Aid

WHEN: 9am - 12pm each Sunday. The pay is $14 an hour. We could also have volunteers rotating if they take the training and pass the background check. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for providing age-appropriate care which includes: feeding, changing diapers, escorting to the bathroom, maintaining a safe environment, holding, or sitting with and cheerfully interacting with children through games, stories, play and prayer. 
• Be polite, friendly, and courteous to all children, parents, and volunteers.

All youth are invited to attend our day at Six Flags on October 14th! 

Meet up at St Gregory’s for departure will be at 10am. 

Pick up will be at 5:30pm at St Gregory’s.

We will need adult chaperones and drivers so if you are current on your Safeguarding God’s Children training and are interested in attending, please let Wade know!

Stewardship-In-gathering will be Sunday, October 29. Giving Estimate Cards and Ministry Interest Forms are in the church narthex. Please call or email the church office, if you need to have a card and form mailed to you.

Every Fall, St. Gregory’s sponsors a parish-wide clothes drive to support our neighbor, Barnett Shoals Elementary School. This year, we are seeking donations, in the following prioritized order, to replenish the school’s clothes closet:

•  boys’ pants/sweatpants/shorts -all sizes, youth XS-XL
•  girls’ pants/shorts/leggings -all sizes, youth XS-XL
•  boys’ and girls’ underwear -all sizes, XS- XL
•  boys’ and girls’ shirts -all sizes, XS-XL (can include t-shirts in multi-packs, not necessarily gendered)

Boys’ and girls’ pants may include new and gently-used, clean items.

Donations will be collected from Sunday, October 1 through Friday, November 3, in the boxes located in the lobby of the Parish Hall. If you have any questions, please contact Gail Eilers, or Jane Sheridan. Thank you, in advance, for your support.

Who doesn't love a picnic - especially an ant-free picnic? Mark your calendars for October 15 and we'll picnic in the parish hall right after the 10:30 service. We'll welcome newcomers and not-so-newcomers (there was this pandemic thing...), we'll celebrate the school year being in full swing, we'll sing praise to autumnal weather, but mostly we'll eat, and talk, and greet, and meet, and do we really need an excuse for that? Bring a side dish or a dessert if you'd like, and the Parish Life Committee will provide the mains and drinks. See you there!
