A Message from the Rev. Tina Rathbone

With God all things are possible. (It seems unlikely – but it’s true!) Take the flowers above. Every Wednesday I reverently pour whatever consecrated wine we have left from our 10 AM Eucharist onto the ground here. Wanting to mark the space, I planted bulbs in the space last Fall. Over the winter, however, I realized that this was the spot our neighbors used to pile up their winter salt and excess snow. Given this, I worried that nothing would be able to grow, but as soon as the snow melted, I began again to pour out the consecrated wine there, praying each time for new and abundant life. It is a tiny thing – so small as to be practically irrelevant in this world that is so full of suffering and loss – but it feels like a real miracle nonetheless that despite the salt and the heavy stack of long-lasting snow, the flowers finally bloomed. The first morning I saw them I almost dropped the chalice -- and then ran back to the chapel to celebrate with those who gather so faithfully there, week by week.

I pray that we may all be similarly strengthened by Jesus’ own life – and that, through him, we too will flourish, despite whatever conditions we may be facing that make it seem unlikely…..

Easter Season Community Lunch

Sunday, May 7th

In place of our coffee hour,

please join us right after our church service

for fellowship and a meal together!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! We have a couple of promised donations still on their way and, knowing this, and that we would soon have all we needed, Andrea contacted the co-founder of the Pirogov First Mobile Hospital and bought the icon above! All proceeds from this beautiful work of art, written in the Ukraine on the lid of an ammunition box, will go to support the mobile hospital which brings medics to the front lines of eastern Ukraine. Since the Icons from Ammo Boxes project began, the mobile hospital has served 50,000 patients.

We have been told it will take anywhere from one to three months for the icon to arrive and when it does, we will celebrate! May God’s peace prevail before then, and may bloodshed and death cease…

GIDEON'S GARDEN

Spring Garden Volunteers!

Pictured above is our completed greenhouse made possible by Taft's generosity and a grant that Gideon's received last May. Thank you all who came out last week to help finalize and move into Gideon's new propagation house! Thank you Jim, Dutch, Laura, Alex, and Louise for all of your help.

With a space free for propagation, our Spring open volunteer hours will begin this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-12pm. We will be seeding and doing light preparation work for the coming season. Even if you don't have a green thumb, everyone is welcome!

I will be a new kind of listener

BY MEREDITH HAIDER

(From ABUNDANT Times Winter/Spring 2023

by The Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts)

I’m sitting in a waiting room when an acquaintance plops down next to me. “I know you’re dealing with a lot of medical issues,” she says. “Do you mind my asking what’s wrong with you?”

I want to turn to her and brightly say, “Not at all, but you go first!” Instead, I swallow my sarcasm and succinctly explain some of the chronic illnesses listed in my medical charts. I’ve learned that sharing anything more than a sound bite means people lose interest. I make sure to end on a positive note in a preemptive effort to ease this woman’s discomfort with my reality........(to continue reading, click the link below)

Babies are placed in the Mampong Home when their mother has died and they cannot be cared for at home.

It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. You can bring money or checks to church on Sundays and place in the jar near the Welcome Table or send a check to:

LEARNING AND DISCOVERY
Becoming Beloved Community

Episcopal churches and communities across the Northeast are confronting their historical involvement in the slave economy

At the 2020 annual convention of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut, Resolution #7 was passed with the intent to recognize and confront systemic racism, white supremacy, and anti-Black bias in the nation and the diocese.

The old TV show The Millionaire, got us to thinking about the rich young man in Matthew 19:16-30, as we continued our discussion of Miguel de la Torre's "Reading the Bible from the Margins." We wondered whether we are called to give everything away and live a subsistence life? This did not seem feasible to us in a modern economy but the discussion led to some provocative questions.

God, you shower us with riches.

We are challenged to put them to use by sharing them with others.

We come together in awe and wonder at your generosity and love,

And pray that we can live up to the trust you have in us.

AMEN

Fifth Sunday

of Easter

John 14:1-14

Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.”

The King of Love My Shepherd

The Bath Chorus sing this lovely hymn by J B Dykes – tune Dominus Regit Me

The King of love my shepherd is,

whose goodness faileth never.

I nothing lack if I am his,

and he is mine forever.

2 Where streams of living water flow,

my ransomed soul he leadeth;

and where the verdant pastures grow,

with food celestial feedeth.

3 Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed,

but yet in love he sought me;

and on his shoulder gently laid,

and home, rejoicing, brought me.

4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill,

with thee, dear Lord, beside me;

thy rod and staff my comfort still,

thy cross before to guide me.

5 Thou spreadst a table in my sight;

thy unction grace bestoweth;

and oh, what transport of delight

from thy pure chalice floweth!

6 And so through all the length of days,

thy goodness faileth never;

Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise

within thy house forever.

Praying for each other and for the needs of the world is a vital mission of Grace Church. To add a prayer request to this list, please contact the Church Office

WHAT ARE YOU

GRATEFUL FOR?

In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.

WELCOME

TO CHURCH SCHOOL!

Church School Sunday

During church school, we talked about the earth and taking care of it. We read a book about God creating the earth so we could remember that story. We then read a new book, “Dear Mama God,” which thanks God for everything on earth.

Afterward, one child wrote a poem called “I Love Earth.” We discussed ways of improving the earth. Some ideas were: making your own toy out of recycled materials, picking up trash, recycling, and making a speech to remind people about recycling and not littering.

One child said: “Every day is Earth Day.”

FLOWER DEDICATIONS!

Please place your dedications in an envelope and include the name of the person you wish to honor.

Please note that your $35.00 contribution toward the flower purchase can be sent to the Grace Office or placed in the Offertory Collection.
