Fire danger still high on Colorado Day

As of this morning, there are still four major fires burning along the the Front Range, making this Colorado Day a mixed blessing. On the one hand, we are fortunate to live in such an amazing and beautiful state. The wildland terrain, howeer, does make our area more prone to wildfires, especially given the hot and dry weather, which is very unfortunate.

In Jefferson County, fire crews are battling the Quarry Fire, which according to the Jeffco website spans about 241 acres. So far, approximately 575 homes have been evacuated across five subdivisions. According to the Jeffco Sheriff's Office who is in charge of managing the fire response, the fire conditions are extremely challenging due to the dry fuels, hot temperatures, steep and rocky terrain, with many rattlesnakes in the area. As of yesterday, there were about 75 firefighters on the ground, multiple support aircraft, one helicopter and a large air tanker pulling water from the Chatfield Resevoir.

Fortunately, according to the update from the Jeffco Sheriff's Office this morning, the fire "behaved" last night, and crews were able to keep the fire from spreading. So far, there have been no structures lost and no one seriously injured. There were a few firefighters injured largely due to heat exhaustion, but they are okay. The number one goal of the fire crews today is to prevent the fire from "jumping" to the north side of Deer Creek Road. Also, a new crew "Hot Shots" are coming in to assist from the Colorado-based San Juan area.

So what can you do? As of now, be sure and sign up for the Jeffco Alert system. The Alert Center allows you to view all alerts and emergencies in your area. If there are alerts or emergencies, they will be listed on the site by category. To be instantly notified of alerts and emergencies subscribe to Notify Me® or RSS. Also, you can keep track of the Quarry Fire on the Jeffco website. Also, the JSO has requested that people refrain from donating any items at this time. Second, you should plan to celebrate Colorado Day at one of the indoor attractions that are free today. You should try to stay indoors where the air quality is better, or recreate in areas that are not near the fires (perhaps go explore some of the unique areas on the Eastern Plains). If you do plan to be outdoors, please don't forget to recreate responsibly so that we do not spark any new fires in Colorado.

For now, I want to extend a huge thank you to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and all the fire crews that assisting with the Quarry Fire. I am hopeful that other areas of the state that are also experiencing these horrific fires are able to contain the spread and that our communities stay safe.

Tips for saving energy and lowering costs: With temperatures along Colorado’s Front Range forecasted to hover near 100 degrees this week, Xcel Energy has posted some ways customers can save energy and money during the heat wave. Customers enrolled in programs that help with energy use during high demand, including Saver’s Switch and AC Rewards should anticipate those programs being used this week. Also, according to Xcel, customers can save up to 3% on their energy bill for each degree their thermostat is set above 72-degrees. In addition, they recommend installing a programmable thermostat and setting the temperature higher when the house is empty, and use ceiling fans, which will allow you to raise your thermostat four degrees without impacting comfort. And don't forget to change your air conditioner filters and clean your air conditioner coils regularly to improve efficiency. Lastly, check out their Energy Saving Tips page for more ideas.
