November, 2016
Guest Artist: Judy Mason
November Meeting: November 3

Judy Mason's artist statement:
"Man was meant to create and make a better world. The beauty of nature and all the abstract shapes that make up many objects here on earth, stimulates our creativity. I enjoy finding those abstractions and applying them in my artwork. It gives movement and interest to a surface. It brings entertainment and fulfillment in discovery. It depletes dullness from our existence."

Bio-  Judy Mason  was raised in Abilene, Texas, where sports and riding bikes were practiced for enjoyment.  Exposure to the arts was minimal.  After marriage and children, Mason began painting in a very traditional manner as it was the only thing she knew; she struggled for years to find pleasure in realistic painting. In 1986, Mason took a two week workshop with Louisiana instructor, M. Douglas Walton which broadened her views on painting. Mason's frustration eased, she found watercolors enjoyable, and she continued studying with Walton for 16 years.

In addition to her work, she also teaches art to both children and adults. Judy has exhibited work at numerous local, regional and international venues. She is a member of several local art venues, and is represented by the Center for Contemporary Art in Abilene and the Firehouse Art Gallery in Weatherford.

Meetings start at 7pm, end at 9pm. They are held at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E. Hickory Street, Denton.

"Outside the Box"  exhibition at PointBank Black Box Theater
Gail Williamson Cope: Exhibition of Animal Series "In Polka Dot Land" is currently on display through January.

Artist Statement: "My work has evolved to a series of mixed media paintings exploring the reduction of mark making to the simplest forms-dots, dashes and circles. Although the use of these most basic forms would imply a simple surface, in fact the marks are layered in complex ways, and the background or under-painting takes on even more importance as it interacts with the layers. An exploration of textile references resonates with my childhood and continues to have value and meaning for me today. The work is the culmination of exploration of art techniques while seeking to convey the deeper experiences of seven decades of study, travel and life experience."

Gorilla Gathering, Mother and Child

The jurors were artist Brigitta Heidtmann from Krefeld and two art historians, Mrs. Alexandra Simon Tönges and Dr. Josef Gülpers, both from Aachen.

Cope completed an MFA and a MA (Art History) at Texas Woman's University in 2013. She also has an MA in German, 1976, from UT Arlington and a BA in French and German from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, 1968.
