Japhet Creek Campus

Awakening spiritual attachment to our common home

The Japhet Creek community is a unique, rural enclave in the middle of Houston where St. Catherine’s owns three acres and additional property. Mere minutes from downtown, the land runs adjacent to Japhet Creek, a mile-long tributary that feeds into Buffalo Bayou. This pastoral enclave – our Japhet Campus – provides St. Catherine’s students a vantage to study the history of humanity from its origins in agriculture, conduct immersive scientific inquiry, engage in economic and cultural work, and collaborate with neighbors in an urban community. Currently, students in the Adolescent Community are investigating and studying the impact water has on society. They visit Japhet 2-3 times each week and are using the campus to fuel inspiration for their specific and individual studies and investigations. Students have participated in presentations describing the amount of water crops and products use throughout their production process and collected water samples of the creek for laboratory water testing.

The Japhet Campus serves as a place for adolescents to study, work, and practice living in community, and inspires students to make connections between their work and nature. St. Catherine’s is committed to evolving the campus into a Montessori-prepared environment that supports the needs of the adolescents as well as our other student communities, in harmony with our neighbors in the surrounding 5th Ward community and the environment. With our Japhet Educational Planning Committee we are planning the next phase of Japhet; determining the indoor and outdoor educational spaces that will give St. Catherine’s students of all ages the opportunity to experience land-based learning as envisioned by Maria Montessori.
