During creative writing classes at JSL, residents choose any number of real-life topics to base their stories upon. Often subjects are explored again and again. In my continuing efforts to be a cheerleader for estate planning, I think back to 1971 and picture my father, sitting at his treasured oak desk with its intricate carvings and polished surface. It had seen decades of family life - bills, correspondence, love letters, and now, a will.
Lloyd was no stranger to the weight of responsibility that came with planning for the future, but on this day, he faced a new task: updating his will and writing personal letters to my older brother Richard and me. At that time, Richard was attending the University of Michigan and I had just graduated from West Bloomfield High School.

Do you know an amazing 80+
year old?
| Nominate them to be part of our incredible celebration on May 18, 2025, at Shaarey Zedek. | I bet you could have a great time on a Fleischman trip to the MGM casino. We’re looking for a few (8-10) good buddies to buddy up with our residents to enjoy the casino on August 27 or 28, depending on volunteer availability. We’d love to have you join us. The only requirement is the ability to push a wheelchair. We’re also seeking volunteers to serve and shmooze at Meer’s Krohlik café on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 11:00am – 1:30pm. We would love for you to be part of the wonderful, heimish JSL community. Please call or email me to sign up for one of these fun volunteer opportunities at 248-592-5062 or brobinson@jslmi.org. | Joanne Kristal, the Coville Life Enrichment Coordinator recently invited her granddaughter, Sydney Gringorten, 21, to perform for the residents. Sydney is a student at Michigan State in the Social Work program. |
LOL
LOL is the theme of our annual Lives Well Lived friend/ fundraiser. The funds provide the “special sauce” that makes JSL a lively place to live – allowing us to provide the boutiques, put on our fabulous resident fashion show, do projects such as last year’s anthology of resident writing “Don’t Write Me Off!” and so much more. The campaign will culminate with an afternoon of comedy on Sunday, November 17. To become a sponsor, visit jslmi.org/jsls-lives-well-lived or call or email me at
248-592-5062 or brobinson@jslmi.org.

GROWING BOLDER:
IN THE MIND OF SOMEONE WITH ALZHEIMER'S OR DEMENTIA
|
What’s it like to live with dementia or Alzheimer's disease? How does it feel when your loved one becomes frustrated when they can't remember an earlier discussion. How do you react?
Teepa Snow is one of the world's leading educators on dementia and the cure that's needed to cope with it. In this eye-opening conversation, she explains what caregivers and loved ones need to know about the minds of those with dementia.

Ooh la la!
JSL welcomed over 20 interested prospects to Meer to Sip, Savor and Tour on July 24th. The culinary team treated the guests to a delectable array of fruits, vegetables, wine and sparkling water, while they listened to French themed music performed by entertainers Renny Kaufman and his daughter, Esther. After the tours of the Magnificent Meer community, everyone left with a bag of macaroons and JSL swag! A bientot!

Fleischman residents and staff came together in celebration of the Summer Olympics in style! The community felt Team USA spirit, dressed in their best red, white, and blue attire. Residents enjoyed friendly competitions in balloon badminton and basketball games. The most creative costumes were awarded medals and to fuel the fun even more, delicious charcuterie boards, wine and soft drinks were served. Go Team JSL! | The first person processed at Ellis Island was a 15-year-old girl from Ireland. On January 1, 1892, Annie Moore was the first passenger to disembark at Ellis Island on its opening day. She had traveled to the United States with her two younger brothers aboard the SS Nevada after departing from Queenstown, Ireland (now known as Cobh). Another amazing fact? The busiest day at Ellis Island was April 17, 1907. | | |

Baseball – Hit a Spiritual Home Run
Honoring our Young Maccabi Players
A young schoolboy stood before his Rabbi and grand master to receive a blessing before his bar mitzvah. He was surprised when his Rabbi asked him, in English. “Which sport do you like best?”
“Baseball,” the boy replied.
“Do you ever play baseball with your friends?” his Rabbi asked.
“Yes.”
“And do you ever see professional games?”
“Sure, I do!
“What’s the difference between your games and the professionals’?”
“Rabbi, when we play, it’s just kids’ stuff, but the professional games are for real.”
The Rabbi addressed the boy with a broad smile. “In your heart you have a big field. The two sides are the good and G-dly inclination and the negative and animalistic drive. Until now they played kids’ stuff, but from now on the game’s for real. Remember, just as in baseball, the side which plays best will win. If you only want to you can always overcome your negative drive.”

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
