“First Responders and Trauma Treatment”

 

Emily Mourik, LMSW, EMDR Trained

 Kim Garrett, LCSW-S, LCDC, CCISM, MBA, Certified Therapist in EMDR, Consultant-in-Training


Objectives:

  1. Educate on the role of the mental health clinician in external mental health for police department.
  2. Identify officer wellness and educate on trauma impacted through job duties.
  3. Discuss community resources used by law enforcement, as well as barriers.
Speaker Bios:  


Emily Mourik has her LMSW and is currently working toward obtaining her hours for clinical licensure. She works for Grand Prairie Police Department in the crisis support unit, and is a co-responder with a law enforcement officer. Together, they respond to 911 calls for service that have a mental health component. Emily also works internally at GPPD with the peer support team and provides first responder wellness resources. Emily serves first responders in private practice at Forged In Valor Counseling and Consulting and is EMDR trained. She has experience working in community mental health and was a crisis Interventionist for a local mental health authority for several years. Emily is married to a narcotics detective for a local police department and is mom to a busy 1 year old boy.

Kim Garrett, LCSW-S, LCDC, CCISM is a Certified Therapist in EMDR and Consultant-in-Training.  She is a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) approved instructor and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP).

Over the course of her career, she has worked in an array of positions in direct care and administration, including acute care psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment centers, private practice, public schools, a local mental health authority, and has been an adjunct professor of social work at both the University of Texas at Arlington and Texas Christian University.   She is currently in private practice at Fort Wellness Counseling in Fort Worth, TX.
