So Many New Faces in the SC Arts Education Community!

Join us on Monday, June 27th, to meet with the new faces from ABC, the SC Arts Commission, and the SC Department of Education. The day will kick off with a panel discussion where we will get to know those new faces and how they envision their role in the South Carolina arts education community. A “speed dating” type of breakout session will immediately follow, where small groups of participants rotate through each of the panelists when they can talk about their specific concerns and needs. After lunch, there will be job specific breakouts tailored to the specific needs of each group.

Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto 2022 |

On Monday, May 30, PSAE will host the opening performance of the 2022 Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto Series. In its 14th year, the series will showcase young actors, dancers, musicians, writers and visual artists in the high-profile venue of Spoleto Festival USA through its affiliation with Piccolo Spoleto.

A series of six programs, each program will feature young artists and/or ensembles in a conversation and performance format. All programs are presented at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church across from Marion Square on King Street in the heart of downtown Charleston at 4 PM.

Submit a Proposal
Share your ideas and experience and propose a session or workshop! Sessions are 60 minutes. 120-minute slots are available but must be approved by PSAE Conference Chair.
PSAE will recognize up to 12 proposals that best embody the theme with ½ price conference registration. Note: PSAE is unable to compensate or pay expenses or registration fees for presenters or others whose proposals are accepted.
Proposal Deadline has been extended until July 15, 2022

School Arts Support Grant - Coming July 2022
|
The purpose of the NEW School Arts Support (SAS) grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC) is to support arts integration and to address learning loss in the arts due to the pandemic. Unlike the Arts Teacher Support Grant (ATS), this grant category is also open to non-arts teachers who are interested in exploring arts integration into their classrooms. The SAS grant can also support school wide initiatives/projects that promote arts integration, innovation and address learning loss in the arts. SCAC recently hosted two webinars for current and aspiring teaching artists entitled “The Business of Being a Teaching Artist." Jef Lambdin, a seasoned and practicing teaching artist, shared tips for success in two two-day installments - "The Nuts and Bolts to Grow Your Business" and "Teaching Artistry and the SC Educational Standards," You can view all four recorded webinars on the SCAC Arts Commission YouTube Page.

A Special Announcement from SC Arts Alliance Executive Director, GP McLeer
Eleven years ago, while attending my first-ever National Arts Advocacy Day in DC as the Executive Director of the Mauldin Cultural Center, I sat down to dinner with members of the board of the SC Arts Alliance. I met Betty Plumb at that dinner, the SC Arts Alliance’s long-serving Executive Director. I found their work interesting, exciting, and something I wanted to be a part of.
Two months later, in May of 2011, I was asked to join the board. Five years later, I became Executive Director.
After six years of service as Executive Director, and five years before then as a member of the Board, I announce my departure from the SC Arts Alliance. My last official day will be May 15, 2022.

Congratulations to 19 Re-Certified ABC Schools! |
ABC Project completed the second cycle of the newly implemented ABC School Certification process. ABC School Certification is a three-year designation that schools must reapply for in order to maintain their certification. This spring 19 schools were recertified as an ABC School. Each of these schools share in the belief that the Arts are an essential component in the Basic Curriculum and are central to student development achieved through making connections, inspiring creativity, and defining culture. |

Free Professional Development |
Join us on our campus June 13-16 for our next FREE Teacher Retreat, Plug-In With Media Arts. Led by Eric Jao from Mix Major and SCGSAH Faculty Member David Gerhard, this series of workshops will immerse teachers in the areas of music production, graphic design, and videography, using FREE tools that integrate well into any classroom. Teachers will leave this retreat with lesson ideas and basic knowledge of media arts that they can use right away with their students!

Did we mention this entire workshop is FREE to South Carolina Teachers? While the focus of the workshop is media arts, the intention is that these art forms can be easily integrated into ANY classroom. Teachers from all subject areas are encouraged to register!

Igniting Summer Learning in South Carolina
This summer, we’re partnering with the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance to bring guest artist experiences to summer programs around the state. Ignite is a series of summer arts experiences designed to “fire up a passion for the arts,” encouraging students to “think like artists” by exploring capacities, processes, questions, and themes through multiple art forms. No prior arts experience is required, and rather than focus on perfecting a skill, students are encouraged to be creative, take risks, and explore new art forms.
Ignite does not accept individual student applications; rather, it is a partnership-based program that encourages strong relationships with school summer camps and community agencies like the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Welcome New and Sustaining Partners
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (VSA & Arts Accessibility Department) was unable to fund its national contracts for arts education residencies for fiscal year 2021-2022.
|
|
|
|
However, AASC was able to offer a modified version of arts education programs due to creative partnerships and leveraging existing funding with others who did not receive a contract from the Kennedy Center. Proud of our partnerships with another KCVSA contractor, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. AASC had a very successful inclusive residency with Hilton Head High School Special Education students! AASC Master Teaching Artist, Ryan Ward (pictured below) conducted a residency where students wrote a play and created a video. Upcoming Programs
We’re looking forward to our upcoming partnership with the City of Columbia Parks & Recreation Department, and Columbia Arts Center pilot summer program for students with disabilities. Interested? Contact Bohumila Augustinova.
AASC will serve as a stakeholder with South Carolina Arts in Basic Curriculum project entitled Community Access to the Arts in Rural Education (CARE). CARE proposes to assertively address the grossly inequitable education in rural communities of persistent poverty. Interested? Contact Ferdinand Cooper.
New Partnership in West Columbia: “Papa Tank’s Center for Inclusion” funded in part by Central Carolina Community Foundation and supported by Columbia Children’s Theatre. “We have dreamed of having a program focusing on inclusion for years, so now we can do that!" Interested? Contact Larry Hembree.
