Board of Directors - Get to Know Your Board

Name: Rose Wiedmer, RN, BSN

Position: Chapter Legislative Representative

Join Date: January 2023

CIC: Not yet

Number of Years in IC: 5

Fun Facts About Me:

I enjoy rowing, writing, baking, gaming, and trying to keep up with my 6-year-old.

Background:

I’ve worked in a variety of healthcare settings, in several different roles, including bed-side nursing as well as a variety of leadership roles including Director of Employee Health, Director of Staff Development, Facility Compliance Officer, and currently as Infection Control Practitioner in acute care.

Why Do You Love Being on the Board:

One of the first reasons I looked into volunteering for the board of APIC New England is that I was “hungry” for infection control knowledge. A great way to learn is to immerse yourself in the field. Like so many others, I was wearing another hat (Director of Staff Development in a long-term care facility), when the responsibility of infection control was dropped into my lap, during the pandemic no less. Even though I was overwhelmed, I was determined to succeed. Research led me to APIC, and eventually APIC New England. Initially, I was concerned that I wouldn’t have enough experience to offer. But I quickly learned this was not the case. Everyone on the board was

incredibly helpful and welcoming; and is comprised of ambitious professionals with a variety of experience and backgrounds (some with even less experience than me)!Secondly, I saw it as a great opportunity to collaborate and network. Being a board memberoffers some really unique, behind-the-scenes experiences (like helping to set up and welcome members at conferences and networking events). These are great ways to connect and meet others in the field. Lastly, I wanted to help other newer infection prevention professionals like myself to not give up. Don’t get me wrong, being an ICP can sometimes be overwhelming, but I’m no longer drowning! The field of infection control is challenging, but manageable (and even exciting) given the right resources and tools. I am glad the APIC New England Board of Directors is part of my toolbox.
