'EV Toolkit': Free resource made available to communities looking to boost their EV infrastructure

What’s happening: Michigan municipalities looking to boost their electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure have a new resource to accomplish just that, thanks to a partnership between the Michigan Office of Mobility & Electrification (OFME) and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). The two organizations have collaborated to create the State of Michigan Community EV Toolkit, a freely accessible guidebook, of sorts, that local governments can utilize in building their EV supply equipment (EVSE) and EV charging infrastructure. >>Read More

MI TriShare Child Care Pilot Program

The MI TriShare Child Care Pilot Program (TriShare) is an innovative approach to increasing access to high-quality, affordable child care for working families, while also helping to retain talent and removing one major barrier to employment.

Through TriShare, the cost of an employee’s child care is shared equally among the employer, the employee, and the State of Michigan — a three-way split — with coordination being provided regionally by a TriShare facilitator hub which in northern Michigan is United Way of Northwest Michigan! >>Read More

$12.4 million in grants help Michigan businesses focus on growing talent, employees gain skills and bigger paychecks

Applications for Going PRO Talent Fund opened May 1

(The application period for the second award cycle ends Wednesday, May 24 at 5 p.m. EDT, and selected applicants will be announced in July 2023)

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan employers looking to take advantage of the Going PRO Talent Fund program will be able to apply for a share of approximately $12.4 million in competitive training awards in the second Going PRO Talent Fund cycle starting Monday, May 1. Going PRO Talent Fund helps ensure employers have the talent they need to grow and stay competitive by providing awards to assist in training, developing, and retaining current and newly hired employees. Training must fill a demonstrated talent need experienced by the employer and lead to a transferable, industry-recognized credential.

Since the program's launch, Going PRO Talent Fund has provided training for nearly 170,000 Michigan workers and supported the needs of more than 6,000 businesses.

"The training costs covered by Going PRO Talent Fund allow Michigan businesses to upskill their workforce and stay competitive in today's global economy," said Susan Corbin, Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) Director. "These trainings also give our state's dedicated workforce the skills they need for bigger paychecks and a better future for themselves and their families."

This year, the application process includes increased transparency for applicants – allowing them to see their scores prior to submitting an application and make adjustments as needed. >>Read More

Short’s Brewing Kicks off Summer with Short’s Fest

With their 19th Anniversary Celebration just days away, Short’s Brewing is deep into the planning for their annual summer celebration, Short’s Fest.

This year, it is scheduled for June 10th, 2023.

“We’re changing the date, people!” shared Rachel Payne, General Manager for the Elk Rapids Tap Room, “We have typically hosted Short’s Fest the same weekend as the Elk Rapids Harbor Days Festival, but we were always bummed to miss out on celebrating Harbor Days with our friends and neighbors.”

With a new date, Short’s Fest is promising to be the kickoff party of the summer and will feature live music, food trucks, and of course, beverages. The only thing missing will be the Harbor Days firework celebration.

Tickets are on sale now with two options available: an early entry ticket will set you back $65 and includes 4pm entrance, drink tokens and a swag bag. General admission tickets are available for $35 and include drink tokens and a 5pm entrance time. With the festivities scheduled until 11pm, there will be plenty of time to ring in summer in style.

The Music House Museum is proud to welcome organist Andrew Rogers accompanying the 1923 classic silent film “Safety Last” and the short “Ask Father” starring Harold Lloyd Saturday, May 13 at 2:00 pm and again at 5:00 pm.

Safety Last! is a 1923 American silent romantic-comedy film starring Harold Lloyd. It includes one of the most famous images from the silent-film era: Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic. The film was highly successful and critically hailed, and it cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in early motion pictures. The film's title is a play on the common expression "safety first", which prioritizes safety to avoid accidents, especially in workplaces.

Ask Father is a short, 13-minute, slapstick-style comedy made by Lloyd in 1919 before his entry into full-length feature films.

The film will be accompanied by Andrew Rogers on our ‘Mighty’Wurlitzer theater organ. Rogers, a Detroit native, is an organist at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor. He also scores and performs silent films, and performs concerts throughout the U.S. and Internationally.

Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased at MyNorth Tickets or at  musichouse.org. We hope to see you there.

Sound Journey at Elk Rapids Yoga Flow

Thursday, June 1, 2023

6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

What is a Sound Journey?

Think of it as an experience where sound can be used to transport you to a dream-like state of vibrational healing. (Sounds pretty blissful, doesn't it?)

With the use of instruments like chakra & alchemy crystal singing bowls, steel tongue drum, tuning forks, and percussive instruments, the sound journey will quiet your mind as the vibrations resonate in your body further blurring the boundaries of being awake and being asleep.

Think of it as a full-body sound massage where you'll be in deep rest, cleansing, healing, and harmonizing on all levels. This is a wonderful experience both physically and mentally.

Wear comfortable clothing and bring your favorite pillow or blanket if desired.

These classes fill up quickly so don’t wait to sign up early!

Saturday, May 13, 2023 - 1:00 pm (2.5 hours), $15 per person

Join us in celebrating the return of spring wildflowers by stitching a large-flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) that literally pops out of the fabric! This flower blooms in northwestern Michigan's woodlands from late April through late May, and can even be seen on the Antrim County seal. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of hand embroidery, including four or more different kinds of stitches. You will be guided through the steps to create your own three-dimensional trillium flower and will leave with a partially-finished project plus all of the materials and knowledge needed to complete it. This workshop is suitable for participants of all skill levels, ages 16 and up; beginner and intermediate variations will be offered. Having some hand-sewing experience will be helpful for this project. Space is limited, so be sure to register in advance. Registration fee includes all materials.
