Tabernacle Relocation Update
As you may have noticed, the tabernacle was relocated last week to the sanctuary beside the altar. What does this mean and how does it impact our celebration of the Mass?
The tabernacle is a special place of reservation for Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament. He is there - fully alive in his most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. The Mass, an extension of His sacrifice on Good Friday, celebrates a reality that we, as Catholics, know to be true: that Jesus Christ is fully and really present in the host consecrated during the Eucharist.
That the Lord of all the universe and creator of our very souls has chosen to humble Himself in order to give us the food of salvation – His very self - is an amazing and truly humbling reality to acknowledge. It should bring us to our knees in wonder and awe!
Because of this tremendous honor, I invite you to fully partake in this mystery by approaching the sanctuary with reverence. The presence of Jesus in the tabernacle on the altar means that when we enter the church we enter a sacred space where Jesus Christ Himself is present. For this reason, we should conduct ourselves appropriately and show respect for the King of Kings.
I ask you to consider spending a few minutes before Mass in prayer, preparing your hearts to encounter Christ both in the Sacred Scripture and in the consecrated bread. I also ask that all conversations be reserved for the Narthex or outside the church, and that these conversations retain a quiet tone so as to not disturb others who may be praying.
Rather than trying to restrict fellowship and community among us, I hope that the focus on the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle on the altar will strengthen the reason why we gather in the first place: to enter into fellowship with our Lord.
Let us approach Christ with humble and grateful hearts and be fully present to the Lord who is fully present to us.
God bless!
Fr. Mike, TOR

Sunday Reflection
February 20, 2022
7th Sunday of Ordinary Time
“But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without expecting anything back…” (LUKE 6:35)
Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Praying for our enemies doesn’t change them, it changes us. Mercy and compassion will keep us on the path to holiness.

Speaker Series
Friday, March 4
9:00am - Church
Speaker: Arland Nichols
Topic: Living and Passing on the Faith within the Home
Please join us for Mass at 8:30am and stay for our GSCC Speaker Series: Living and Passing on the Faith within the Home.
Arland Nichols, president and founder of the St. John Paul II Foundation, will join us for a talk on the incredible calling and responsibility of parents to be the primary educators of their children. His talk will present the following:
- Spouses must first be witnesses and are called to live their faith intelligently, intentionally, and ardently.
- Families cannot go it alone but need to form and create small communities of evangelizing families who live the gospel and, in turn, radiate it to the world.
- The goal of marriage and family life is to grow together in holiness so that each and all members of the family might enjoy Heaven.
- Families are blessed to be the primary agents of the Gospel mission and as the family goes so goes the whole world.
For nearly a decade Arland taught at a Catholic high school and worked at an international nonprofit. During those years he became a popular speaker, successful writer, and he established the groundwork for launching the St. John Paul II Foundation. Arland earned a BA in philosophy from Texas A&M, an MDiv in Theology from University of St. Thomas, and is completing a PhD in bioethics from Regina Apostolorum in Rome. With the generous support of his wife, Cindy, and their eight children, Arland is blessed to lead the St. John Paul II Foundation as it becomes the foremost Catholic non-profit proclaiming the Good News of life and family.

Statement of Faith: Steve Evans
My journey to the Catholic Church has been a long one. I was raised as a Southern Baptist but my experience there was rocky. My grandfather was a pastor and raised me along with both of my mentally disabled parents. Our household was one that could be tumultuous at times. My mother is still mentally disabled but my father, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, passed away in 2011. My experiences in the church were altered mainly due to my father's mental health. He would sometimes have outbursts in the church that would lead to him being removed. These outbursts eventually led to him not being allowed to attend our Baptist church anymore. This hurt me deeply. Growing up, all I had been taught was that Jesus was accepting of people like my father and that the Church should accept him for who he was and seek to help him. From that moment on, I had never really had a great welcoming experience in any church. Some were ok, but I never really felt at home.
That is until my second year of college at Texas A&M in 2014. I was asked by a friend to try out for the St. Mary's choir in College Station. I thought to myself, "Will they really let me sing at the Catholic church even though I'm not Catholic?" I was very doubtful about the possibility, but I tried out anyway. The people there were immediately accepting and didn't inquire or push about my Protestant background. This shocked me because I had always had a bias that Catholics were very exclusive in their beliefs. I found a great group of brothers and sisters in Christ who really helped me grow in my faith without making me feel like I was different. This was revolutionary for me.
And this was the beginning of my long journey towards becoming a Catholic. In my stubbornness and pride, it has taken me quite a while. I struggled for a long time with the concept of the Pope, Mary, and the Saints until I started really researching and reading the Catechism. I didn’t see the need for one person leading the Church until I realized the obvious, Jesus is the head of the Church. It makes sense that he would place one person there in his stead to help lead and guide each generation. I had always thought Catholics idolized Mary until I came to realize that wasn’t true at all. She is a shining example of what it is like to be pure in heart and loving towards Christ. As for the Saints, it wasn’t until I heard someone in a conversation mention that asking a saint to pray for you is the same as asking another brother or sister in Christ to pray for you. That concept never occurred to me but now made perfect sense. However, I can confidently say, the one thing I never really struggled with was the concept of the Eucharist. Jesus's words literally say, "This is my body." There is no way I could refute that. I fell in love with the idea of truly consuming Christ and allowing him to be within me physically. That is something my heart yearns for.
Here at Good Shepherd, the RCIA process has been just as welcoming as my first experience at St. Mary's. The people have been warm, kind, and accepting of me. They have given me the time to learn and have been flexible with any changes I have had in my life and job that could have prevented me from going through the process. I have learned so much about how I can grow in my relationship with Christ through the different sacraments and I am delighted that I am able to take this next step through Confirmation. I am excited for the path that lies before me and can’t wait to serve my role in the body of Christ in the Catholic Church.
*Steve came into full communion with the Catholic Church at the 9am Mass on Sunday, December 9th, 2021.
