WESLEY WEEKLY

August 18 - 25

An Evening of Information

The WMUMC Discernment Team encourages all members to be present Sunday, August 28, at 5 p.m. for a presentation by Dr. Terry Moore, Senior Pastor of Weddington United Methodist Church, a 4,700 member church in our conference that is on the path to disaffiliate from the UMC. Dr. Moore is a graduate of Pfeiffer University, Emory University, and Columbia Theological Seminary. He has served congregations throughout our annual conference and has served as President of our Conference’s Board of Ordained Ministry. He has been the pastor of Weddington UMC since 2008. This information session will occur in our Fellowship Hall/Contemporary Worship Center.

Nationally Syndicated Columnist to Speak at Local Church

Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church invites the community to see nationally syndicated columnist John Rosemond on Sunday, August 21. Two opportunities will be available to hear Rosemond.

During the 11 a.m. worship service, Wesley Memorial UMC will honor and thank area educators and administrators. The event will feature Rosemond followed by a free lunch in the Dining Hall for educators that will include free gifts and a Walmart gift card. Please RSVP by August 15 for this event.

Rosemond has worked with families, children, and parents since 1971 in the field of family psychology. He is a licensed family psychologist in North Carolina. Rosemond is syndicated in approximately 225 newspapers nationwide. He has written eleven best-selling parenting books. He is known for his sound advice, humor and easy, relaxed, engaging style.

Rosemond is holding a seminar titled, “Parenting with Love and Leadership” in the Fellowship Hall at Wesley Memorial UMC at 2 p.m. The focus will be on effective discipline, with an emphasis on universal principles rather than specific techniques, although the latter is used in true-life examples and anecdotes.

In this often humorous and thought-provoking seminar, Rosemond describes the contemporary parenting conundrum in clear, compelling terms and then describes a practical, tested solution. He teaches how to motivate maximum child compliance by using “leadership speech.”

Tickets ($5 per person or $10 per couple) can be purchased in the church office or online  Email Rev. Clark Chilton with questions.

Bring your kids to Sunday Funday each week at 9:45 a.m.

The new Children’s Ministry nursery for children ages 0 -2 will be located in room A-213, the first room on the left in the elementary hall. This puts the nursery on the same hallway as all the other Sunday School classrooms. The nursery is now closer to all Sunday morning service locations, making it easier for parents to find. Our new nursery will open the morning of Sunday, August 21.

Parents of 3rd Graders! Please email Ann Marie Chilton at if your child is in the 3rd grade this fall - it’s time for them to receive their Wesley Memorial Bible this September!

This book study group exists for the purpose of promoting an understanding of the Christian faith by studying the thought of the greatest twentieth-century defender of the Christian faith, C.S Lewis. A book or an essay by or about C.S. Lewis is discussed at each meeting. This group meets in the living room of the main building of the River Landing Retirement Community in Colfax on the first Thursday of each month, October – June, from 7 to 8 p.m. This group has members from around the region and is facilitated by our Senior Pastor, Dr. Jeff Patterson. The first organizational meeting of the group this year will be a prime rib dinner in the dining room of Wesley Memorial on Thursday, August 25, at 6:30 p.m. The cost of the meal is $10 and RSVPs are required. This will be an informational meeting and the reading list for the year will be distributed. For more information or to RSVP for the informational dinner, email Dr. Patterson.

WMS Welcomes a phenomenal NEW group of retired Teachers and a Director back into the family. We are very excited for the opportunity to partner with,

Susan Hedrick, Debbie York, Susan Sumpter, Shirley Boyles, Kay Tucker, Jana Brotherton, and not pictured is Judy Needham.

They will be known as the Sage & Spice Mentors.

Sage is a person who is distinguished for their wisdom and good judgment. A person becomes sage through reflection and experience.

The flower essence of sage helps a person to draw wisdom from their life experiences and see life.

To become sage and spice, one must develop the ability to learn and grow from all of life’s experiences, both positive and negative.

You must explore, learn, build relationships, care, teach, investigate, and challenge yourself and others.

These Ladies will be, Prayer Partners sharing notes of encouragement, a cup of coffee, and a treat bag with new WMS Staff. They will support WMS by teaming with the Early Childhood Committee for teacher hospitality, attending programs and events, praying for WMS, WMUMC, and the Community, as well as partnering with the WMS Leadership for staff team building opportunities.

Thank you, Sage & Spice Mentors, you are each a true Blessing to the WMS Ministry!
